Q:

What tools are need to pull a differential cover from an AMC 20 rear axle?

I bought a Jeep, and I want to put a new seal in the rear axle. It is an AMC 20. I am not sure what tools are needed. I have a place to do it. I want to start my tool collection, and start with tools I need now. Thanks for all the help.

A: To replace the gasket u will need a torx bit. I think the size is T30 or T35. Sears has a full set of Torx bits ranging from T10 to T50. It has been a while since i have replaced a gasket for this axle. (answered by demonguy71 on February 05, 9307)

A: It's pretty easy. I'm not sure of the exact bolt size, but you will need a ratchet set to do the job. Satndard sizes should be fine. Do have the new seal on hand and ready to go on. You should also apply a bead of RTV sealant to either side of the new gasket as the seal will last longer and be more water-tight that way. Have an oil pan ready, the gear oil in there will pour out everywhere as soon as you pry the diff cover off. New gear oil is also a must. DO NOT reuse the old oil. Remove all the bolts holding the diff cover on. **IMPORTANT- make sure you remove ALL reminants of the old gasket from both the diff cover and the diff itself, taking care not to get pieces of gasket in your differential (if you do a little, no big deal)! Since you have it off, you should clean all the dirt, oil, and grime off your diff cover- it will look WAY better when it's clean. Once the cover is back on and the RTV is dry (wait at least 5 hours before driving or filling your diff with oil-the longer you wait, the better), squirt the new gear oil in through the fill plug (a bolt in the side of your differential somewhere). Fill it up until oil just pours out of the hole. Ok, there you go. Does that make any sense? It's a way easy thing to do, don't worry. Everything you need will be available at your local auto parts store. Feel free to email me with questions. Good luck!

Q:

where can i find the lowest priced lockers for amc 20 rear axles on a 1983 Jeep Cj5?

im looking for low priced lockers for my 1983 jeep Cj5 and i have AMC 20 rear axles, i can't seem to find any for under $325.... if you have any suggestions please email me
(asked by Automotiveman on December 25, 2008)

A: Don't spend your money on a locker!!! it's a AMC 20....just weld the spider gears. What size of tires are you running. On a AMC 20 i would put anything bigger than 33 or you're going to break the axles!! i have a 79 CJ5, 304, AMC 20 rear welded, Dana 44 front welded and i want to swap the weak AMC 20 for a Dana 44. so once again don't spend your money on that!!!! Take care and good luck!!! (answered by charolastra on December 25, 2008)

Q:

Can a do-it-yourself home mechanic rebuild an AMC 20 rear axle?

(asked by Gary P on July 16, 2008)

A: Why? The AMC 20 axle is about the lamest axle ever made. It's time to start thinking about an up-grade. Even a D35 is better than a AMC 20. I like the Ford 8.8 or D44 (if you can find one for a decent price).
