I also have the problem that I have a small-block Chevy hooked to an AMC steering box. I had to have the hoses made to get them to work together.

I have heard of people stroking a AMC (68-69) 390 with a 401 crank? I heard it called a 401 stroker. Im a novice. Anyone point me in the right direction? Cost to rebuild a 390 and stoke it? Thanks. (asked by joeaverage20032001 on July 27, 2008)
A: It is going to be a lot of extra dollars (like double) over a standard rebuild of the 68-69 390; unless you get a '70 or later 390 block or 401 block.
The 1970 and later blocks are a bit taller than the earlier blocks. Which means to put a 401 crank in an early 390, you'll need custom pistons and/or connecting rods.
I would not do it; at most you are gaining about 3% (401/390 -1) torque and horsepower - which you will not even feel. That amount of power difference will make less than 0.1 second difference in a ¼ mile time. (answered by Nigel M on July 27, 2008)

the car needs it to be running. I would prefer that it had a 390 V8 as well but a smaller V8 will do. The cheaper the better. needs to have a straight body. paint/interior is not as imortant so long as it is running. (asked by Miguel C on March 06, 2008)

What's the best amc v8 343 or 360?
Hey, i'm looking for running motor for my 68 amx in cleveland oh. Really just want to drop one in as cheaply as possible for now, maybe look for 390 or 401 later. Found a 2brl 343 good shape and running out of a 68 ambassador with borg warner automatic transmission and also found a 360 2brl with 727 automatic out of a 73 javalin. Is there a diffrence in smog requirments for these two motors. Originality aside which is the best and most powerful engine. Heard the 73 javelins took a big hit on horse power and where only pushing about 190hp. Think the 343 is gen 1 and the 360 gen 2 but don't know the diffrence. I still have the original 68 amx 343 and 4spd but in poor condition, thought I would just switch over 4brl manifold and get a new carb. Probably rebuildable but it's such a hassel. Hmmm what to do. A: If you just want to get it on the road for now with minimal trouble then I would use the 343, if you want more power I would go with the 360. There is nothing wrong with the 343, but the heads don't flow anywhere near as well. You'll never get the older style heads to do as well as the heads on the 360. The 343 is just a destroked 360, they increased the deck height in 1970 to get the added displacement (290->304, 343->360, 390->401). Either way don't use an auto trans, keep your 4 speed! If you want to use an auto trans for some reason use the 727, the borg warner is an inferior trans. Yes replace the Carb with whoever you like best, holley or edelbrock.
