I have a 86 AMC cherokee, where can i find out if i can put a bigger engine in?
right now i have a 2.5, but id like a bigger engine, even if its a hair bigger, so i dont need to change the tranny, rear end, transfercase, etc. Also, i recently had to replace the torque converter and that had to be special ordered from Germany, where can I fing a list of all the common parts and their points of origin? If i knew this was a AMC and not Crystler, I never would have bought it. Nothing but problems!(asked by nightelvesreasy on March 12, 2007)
A: If you're only going to switch to a slightly larger engine, don't bother. Sell yours and get a Chrysler one if that'll make you happy.
The transmission that you're upset about is a Chrysler product, A904 Torqueflite. You could convert to the other factory engine for your Cherokee, which is the GM 2.8L V6, but keep in mind that this engine is prone to coolant leaks around the intake manifold and it wasn't much of a powerhouse either. In fact, the 2.8L wasn't known for its longevity, so it will be hard to find a cheap one that is in good enough shape to swap. Later GM 3.4L V6's will also match the bolt pattern, but then there are wiring harness/electronics issues to deal with, and that means more $$. Good luck!
