You Ask We Answer

Q:

1972 amc javelin-is it a good investment as a restoration project?

its stripped to bare metal-new 401 v8-spoiler and new bucket seats-needs transmission,dashpad-rear seats and misc. intyerior parts.Or should I sell it as is?
(asked by adam s on March 07, 2008)

A: Check out what other ones are selling for on Hemmings.com. Some cars are worth more to certain buyers at different times....a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Personally, I always liked the look of them as well as the AMX. Had a friend after high school that put a 440 Dodge motor in his...what a ride that was!! (answered by paul h on March 07, 2008)

A: yes those are few and far between now days (answered by nbr660 on March 07, 2008)

Q:

which car would be better, a '78 king cobra mustang, or a '73 AMC javelin?

the mustang will have a 302 with a c4 or c6 tranny, the javelin will have a 401 with a 727 tranny
(asked by pittsburghfan87@sbcglobal.net on April 01, 2008)

A: the AMC no doubt...401 is rarer and worth a lot...78 mustang 302 has abt 130 hourse power...smog motor (answered by Pedro S on April 01, 2008)

Q:

'73 AMC Javelin SST, what engine/ tranny would you suggest?

stay original and go with a 401 and 727 tranny or do something else
(asked by pittsburghfan87@sbcglobal.net on March 31, 2008)

A: It depends. If you put a brand X motor in, then you will kill the value of the vehicle because it becomes a mutt. SO many people think putting a SBC in will increase the value, yet when it comes time to sell, rarely anyone wants to buy them. (they probably got the idea from people doing Chev motor swaps in early Jeeps which were underpowered)
If the 8th character in the VIN is a Z, then the car is worth some $$$ in original condition. Good original paint is worth more than a repaint. If it's not a Z car, then I would be tempted to do a 4.0L Jeep motor and efi swap with the O/D trans (from a 2wd Jeep Cherokee built before '96)
That's what I am doing with my '82 AMC Spirit (the 4.2L is getting a 4.0L head with HO EFI and an '88 Jeep XJ 2WD AW4 auto trans) since I drive it daily and need fuel economy. I figure 22 mpg with a carb and no O/D means I'll get closer to 25 mpg with the EFI and an OD since I cruise the highway.
It's my car to enjoy, just as the Javelin is yours to enjoy. (answered by jim b on March 31, 2008)
