You Ask We Answer

Q:

My 1976 AMC Matador has purged a little motor oil down into the exhaust and muffler- why?

After 12 years of inactivity(65,000 original miles) I brought it back to running and have already driven 200 highway and city miles. It always starts up just fine. The oil light comes on after 5 minutes idling and disappears when I give it some gas, returning when I let off the gas.
(asked by tim r on August 12, 2009)

A: This is two separate questions.

1. Oil in the exhaust means the rings are most likely shot. Maybe some rust built up while it was sitting

2. Oil light on means low oil pressure or bad sending unit

You're probably going to have to rebuild the motor. (answered by Paul on August 12, 2009)

Q:

Is it possible to put a supercharger on a 1973 AMC Matador?

and if it is how much?
(asked by blackdelo54 on February 05, 4691)

A: Call Summit Racing in Akron, OH .
Toll Free Number is on their web site
Search for the name.
Ask for a tech.
Those guys have seen and done it all.
Just give them the motor specs, and they can tell ya.

Good Luck. (answered by Martin on February 05, 8950)

Q:

Wondering if a 1974 AMC Matador is a good car?

i have recently been looking into a first car... i am 16 years old and i have came across a 1974 AMC Matador. i love the muscle car look and the coupe really makes me smile haha. I need to know if anyone knows anything about the actual model?if its reliable, and if you would recommend it... well hope theres someone out there that knows a little something. thanks a lot
(asked by Laxer28 on February 05, 6853)

A: Bad stigma and a fickle public with a narrow view will kill any company no matter what they build. AMC's penalty in life was never having adequate resources to build their products. The result was a cosmetic build quality that didn't come up to par with the competition at the time. But don't pay attention to the negative comments in this post form the others. They built some very reliable drive trains and motors.

The biggest irony is that I see more of this AMC "junk" as they call it driving around today, than the equivalent era Japanese junk they so praise. Come to think of it, I see more 80's American cars on the road than equivalent 80's Japanese cars too. Oh well, just an observation, but I digress here...

The particular Matador model you are looking at is (in my opinion) going to become a very desirable collectible car in the not too distant future. Already the Pacer, late 50's Ramblers and the Hornets are getting a lot of cult appeal around the show circuit.
In the muscle car circuit, the S/C Ramblers, Americans, and Marlins are getting very respectable appeal, with the AMX's leading the pack.

Going back to your Matador question. Mechanical parts will be a cinch to find on line and to a good degree through your local big auto parts chains. Where you will have a challenge will be in the trim and interior pieces. These cars came with unique pieces, and some of them are unique to the Matador.

What I recommend you do is become a member of the AMO (American Motors Owners) club. There you will be able to find the resources you need, not only from members, but service providers that they recommend. You will also see properly restored cars so that you can use them as a reference in the restoration process for yours.

At 16, you are going in the right direction, and you have some time to read, learn, and make yourself an expert on the car or cars that interest you. This is very important because when the time comes to buy one, with your knowledge you will be able to separate the honest cars from the ones that are counterfeit, or just plain junk.

As a starting point, ask your parents to buy you a copy Hemmings Motor News. Something tells me that there is probably one or more laying around in your house - since at 16 you are mentioning AMC Matadors.

Raise the challenge - There is a very special edition of the Matador for the year you are interested in. It was the Oleg Cassini edition. If you can get hold of one, you will have a guaranteed collector car with a lot of potential.

In the late 60's and through the 70's, AMC partnered with famous clothing designers and clothing brands to make some very unique special editions. If you want rarity, look these up:

Pierre Cardin edition 1970 AMX
Levi's edition Gremlin
Oleg Cassini Matador

There are about four more, but I can't think of them at the moment. This is where reading about these cars and becoming an expert is important when it's time to shop around. (answered by Delamothe on February 05, 3356)
