Q:

AMC Eagle SX/4 engine swap, 151 four cylinder to 258 six and possible transmission issues?

I have a 82 AMC Eagle SX/4 with a 3 speed auto and 151 4 cyl engine. I would like to replace the 4 cyl engine with the AMC 258 six cyl engine. How ever I do not believe that the transmission bellhousing pattern is the same for the two different engines. I belive the 3 speed auto trannys on the 258 engines had a different bellhousing pattern but I cannot verify this. I have also heard that there were significant suspension differences between cars that came with a four and those that had a six.

Basically are there any issues with dropping a 258 AMC 6 cyl into a n SX/4 that came with a 3 speed auto tranny and a 151 four cyl?

A: First off I would check with your state DMV and find out if changing the CID (Cubic Inch Displacement) of the motor effects the registration of the car. Some states have Laws that prohibit it others have a whole new registration process that needs to be completed before the car can even be registered. As far as your question I would check the bolt pattern on both blocks. If they are different then you need a different bell housing/transmission. (Some Bell housings on the transmissions can be removed and a different one put on) that would give you the best idea if the two would mate up. As far as the suspension issue you may need to change the front springs for handle the weight of the new motor. there is also a cheaper fix. You can get some rubber wedges for the springs to keep them from compressing to much, however this may change the quality of the ride. (answered by gearnofear on October 14, 2006)
