A: run a hot wire to the coil ,,and make sure you have a good battery hook up on it,,yo wont run it for long,,but you can hear it run long enough,,you can use a gallon jug as a gas tank,,just be care full that it doe not back fire on you,,other wise it will start and run if you get power to the coil,,and the starter,,be CARE full,,i hope this help,s. What is the best way to time an AMC 304 V8?
Its on a '79 CJ7 Jeep. The front main seal was leaking. I pulled the distributor and had to turn the motor a bit, so I need to find out how to time it now. (asked by Susan on June 28, 2009)
A: rotate the engine with #1 out,and as the piston travels out if you have your finger over the hole, it will go phwesh.when it does this, stop(you got to bump the starter to do it or it moves to fast, so you need a helper).then look at the timing mark and set it on 0 or the line that doesnt say 10(turning by hand and it should be on the harmonic balancer)now pay attention to your distributor wires and corresponding tower for #1.drop distributor in till it lines up with #1 tower on the distributor,it may not drop all the way in. have your helper bump the key around momentarily a couple times till the distributor drops in.then with the vac line to the adv on the distributor plugged, start the engine, and listen to it,make sure you have oil pressure or do it over.okay now rev engine fast like on off throttle, ideally the rpms should climb equal to the rate they fall.hook up vac line.load the engine down testing for ping, then do the start test if the engine hesitates remotely when cranked and warm, loosen the clamp and retard the timing a hair(the engine gets quicker) (answered by idontgivafork on June 28, 2009)

I have a 1976 AMC 401 V8 in my CJ5, what Automatic Transmissions and 5 speed transmissions can i bolt on it?
I'm trying to find a tranny to do a straight bolt on, dont want to have to buy a whole bunch of extra conversion kits, parts, or other stuff. needs to also attach to a Dana 300 Transfer Case. Thanks (asked by Nick on February 05, 7279)
A: your choices with bolt on automatics are the torqueflite 727 or GM turbo 400, both of which can be sources from Wagoners full sized Cherokees from the 70's. Both are fine transmissions. With manual trans the 2wd amc guys bolt in t5's from mustangs but I doubt that will work with a transfer case. You might be stuck with the Borg Warner stock 4 speed, which is also a nice trans. you can find these in CJ's. Get on a jeep forum and ask there. Take care of that 401, they are hard to come by and cost (I'd love one). (answered by javelin1973401 on February 05, 6305)
