THE recently released Renault Laguna coupe is surprisingly stylish, with a rear end to rival an Alfa Romeo. But at a minimum of £21,000 from new it needs to be more than pretty.

There is a lot that is fabulous about it - the cruise, the economy, the gadgets - but a few things that are not quite good enough. The main problem being the handling.

Wait 18 months and the thumping early depreciation will reduce the price to a level where the flaws seem petty. Suddenly a bad car becomes a great car.

This happens at different ages with different motors, but there are loads of examples of cars that weren't quite good enough to justify their early price. Which means that they are now under-valued used deals, just waiting for you to find them. Like these three:

Good looking, practical and with a very flexible interior. Overalll a very classy and practical package which mainly holds its value well. 2.0 petrol has plenty of power but is much less popular so prices are volatile.

Where is the engine number located on an alfa romeo 156 engine?

My mechanic is looking for the engine number on my 2001 alfa romeo 156 1.8 T.Spark Veloce. Strangely he doesn't know where to look despite being an Alfa specialist! Does anyone know where this number would be found?

A: After checking my data, the number should be between the exhaust manifold and the gearbox bell housing.Stamped into the engine block. (answered by Mike the mech on June 10, 2009)
