2010 Audi S4 AutoWeek Long-Term Wrap-Up: Sweet Sorrow

We put the Audi S4 about to leave the fold in the same category. Typically, the vehicles that rack up the most miles are the people haulers, and to that end, the record still belongs to the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, at just less than 36,000 miles. We loathed handing in the keys in for the 2000 Ford Focus ZX3, a bare-bones model boasting crank windows and more fun than any $14,000 car should offer. Some cars are harder to part with than others. For the past year, the car's been an all-around blast to drive no matter the task, the destination or the route. the car rocked. The final odometer reading stands in testament to our fondness--it stopped just shy of 29,600 miles when the clock on our loan expired.

Q:

What are the miles per gallon of a 2000 Audi S4 with the Stage 3 system?

I own a 2000 Audi S4. I plan on putting a Stage 3 system. I have no idea how much will my miles per gallon drop after I have this system put in. Stock it is supposed to give 20 city and 23 to 25 mpg highway. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
(asked by MrLajara on February 23, 2008)

A: I happen to own a stock 2000 S4 as well, and yes, the car averages 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Considering a stage III B5 S4 is capable of producing roughly 450HP and 470 ft/lbs torque, I would estimate that it would average around 15 mpg average, considering you have some fun with it.

Here's a similar S4 with 450HP that gets 26 mpg!

A: I don't believe it will drop. Are you talking about Stage 3 racing clutch? If you are, then i think mpg will stay the same if you shift normally.

And you are wrong about the stock.

Stock for 2000 S4 is 17mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. (answered by ProStoY_PatSaN on February 23, 2008)

Q:

what should i do with my 2000 audi s4?

i just bought a 2000 audi s4 with 75k on it for $10,000 what mods should i do and are there any good sites for mods online?
(asked by ortiz4mvp34 on September 15, 2009)

A: a 75k upgrade may get a little dicey...High mileage stage I, II, or III S4s tend to see problems, but provided the car was maintained well and serviced properly, you should be OK.

Also, about the turbos...many people simply assume and claim that the turbos "blow" at high mileage. That is a blanket statement. My S4 currently has 140,000 miles on it, when I had a few minor maintenance repairs that required the front end be taken off, I asked Champion Audi to take a look at the turbos and tell me how they are doing. (I go to school 13hrs away from home and I drive). They said the turbos are "in excellent condition." In fact, I have not seen a turbo, or turbo related problem EVER. Same thing in my old Stage III.

What mods? It all depends on how much money your willing to spend. The easiest/cheapest way to see hp gains would be to upgrade the ECU (chip). GIAC makes the best for Audi's. This would put you at Stage I, with hp gains of about 40-55 and around $300+ in the hole.

The next step would be to install a full exhaust system (turbo-back), but this is where it gets a little pricey. Good systems run about $1,000 minimum. This would put you at Stage II. A lot of S4 owners swear by the Milltek systems, but its a preference choice.

Finally there is the KO4 turbo kit. Stage III, about $2,500 for the parts (plumbing, intercoolers, spark plugs, etc. etc.) If you make it to stage III, hp gains will have nearly doubled stock. GIAC also sells the KO4 turbo kit with all the plumbing.

NOTE for other answerer's: the B5 S4 (2000-2002) is a 2.7L twin turbo! (answered by Scotty Shades on September 15, 2009)

A: With a car like that go for aesthetic tuning, leave the engine the way it is, plus you better find a local customize shop, don't trust the internet so much. (answered by Kevin777 on September 15, 2009)

Q:

How much is routine maintenance on a 2000 Audi S4? Brakes, Tranny Service, etc...?

I'm thinking about buying a 2000 Audi S4, all the ones I've looked at have less than 70k miles, but I can't find how much maintenance on this car is. How much to change pads and rotors, how much for an Auto tranny service....Also, what problems have you encountered, if any.
(asked by Jamie on February 09, 4788)

A: It can vary from shop to shop. Give Mike a call at Wicked Motorsports, he can give you some ball park numbers and is a well respect tuner of the B5 S4 Audi.

I can't remember how much pads and rotors ran me but a timing belt and waterpump job a few years ago ran me about $1300 bucks or so. It's a big job so there's a lot of other little things you might as well have done while the front is off. I think it's reasonable to expect anywhere from $1000 to $2000 per year in maintenance cost. On any out of warranty car you should be socking away $200 to $300 bucks per month in the future repair/maintenance fund.

A lot of the problems with the B5 were due to owner usage and modification. The more you left the alone the more reliable they tended to be. If the car was chipped or tuned the turbos have probably been blown and replaced at least once. Anyway, check the Quattroworld board and give Mike a call. (answered by Gray Area on August 18, 2009)
