Voice of Democracy 2009

Members of Palm Coast VFW Post 8696 and the VFW Women's Auxiliary had an awards ceremony for the 38 students at FPC who participated in the annual Voice of Democracy essay/speech contest. Contest chairwomen Dianne Preston was very excited to have so many participants.

"It's great to see so many kids celebrating the veterans," she said.

The theme of this year's contest was "Does America Still Have Heroes?" All 38 participants received a certificate of participation and the top five essay writers were presented with monetary awards.

The winners were: First place -- Michelle Behling ($300); second place -- Brian McDonald ($200); third place -- Rowan Littlefield ($100); fourth place -- Austin Cooper ($25); and fifth place -- Lauren Rawlins ($25).

The ceremony opened with the presentation of colors by the FPCHS JRROTC Cadets and included the reading
