Q:

how can you tell the difference between a bmw e36 m3 and a normal bmw e36?

my friend got a new car.. its a bmw e36 1992 but he put m3 bodykits on it and a m3 side mirrors and a m3 spoiler and had it repainted and put an m3 badge on it. sounds kinda poserish i know but it looks like a m3 to me.. so besides looking at the engine how can i tell the difference between an m3 and a normal e36?
(asked by Sean B on May 04, 2008)

A: where do i start! first of all, those lovely 3 striped M badges :) grill front, side guards and boot, all over the interior. Front and rear bumpers, side skirts and M Mirrors. List goes on...

Its quiet easy to buy an E36 and turn it into a look-a-like, but the way i would tell the difference is by the muffler (might sound strange but yeah) Thats one thing that people dont bother changing unless they go aftermarket. The actual muffler is a lot bigger and fatter than the standard E36s, plus the twin outlets is a give away too :)

By the sounds of it your friend is going for looks. With the changes he/she has made, i would leave it at that. By the time you start getting into the finer points, you might as well have spent the money upfront and bought the real deal.

Hope this helps :) (answered by Matthew R on May 04, 2008)

A: The easiest way simply from the exterior is to look at the minute details that an M3 came with. Obviously, he has attempted to copy the body kit but most do not go as far as to install an M3 muffler. The M3 has a very beefy looking, dual exhaust with chrome tips that somewhat hangs below the car because of its size. Obviously, one look at the engine will tell you its not an M3. Most do not go as far as to upgrade the interior with the M3 accented seats, door trim and gauges either. (answered by Ian on May 04, 2008)

Q:

How much would it cost to have an engine rebuild or replace for a bmw e36 engine.?

I am thinking about buying a bmw with the e36 engine but it has alot of miles, and I was wondering if it is worth to replace.

Q:

What would be the best induction kit for my BMW E36 316i?

It is a 1.8 litre, not a 1.6 litre engine. 316i is just the model number, NOT the engine size. It is a 1995 BMW E36 316i 1.8 litre four cylander. I would like to know what would be the best induction kit on the market for my car, that will produce a pretty mean exhaust note as well as increase the bph/kw. But more for sound. thanks.
(asked by A|f. on May 18, 2007)

A: An induction kit (air coming in) won't make any difference in tailpipe sound, but some will make things louder in the cabin. For exhaust sound (what folks on the street will hear), you'll need to think about your exhaust mods.

If money is no object, Dinan is the way to go. BMW even covers their parts under the factory warranty. A Dinan exhaust will run you around $1,000 and their cold air intake will run you about $500.

If you're on a budget and looking strictly for sound, any competent muffler shop could fab you a Flowmaster - even a glass pack - set up.

BMW does a pretty fair job with their stock systems - an intake and exhaust set up will really only net you 10 horsepower at max. Further, your 1.8 liter simply doesn't have the displacement to benefit greatly from modifications.

As with all things BMW, quality will cost considerably more.

My suggestion would be to get an intake kit (e.g.: K&N, etc.) and look into the online parts stores for an exhaust system (check out Bavairian Autosport, etc.) (answered by monty1775 on May 19, 2007)
