Lucky for us (and you) some auto journos in Spain got their mitts on BMW’s latest and greatest M5 and produced two videos worth of B-Roll of the new M5. The first features the new BMW cruising gently around town and on the track, while the second... We got our first look at the 2012 BMW M5 last month, but what we didn’t get was an up close and personal tour of the new F10. While this particular driver doesn’t have a particularly heavy left foot, he still puts his foot into the throttle enough that we can hear the pleasant burble from the M5’s new twin-turbo 4. How that driver didn’t get the urge to really put his foot into it, we don’t understand either – nonetheless until we can get our hands on the new M5, this will have to do.
Q:
A: Harley guy has no f*cking idea what he's talking about. It can be done, but it would cost an insane amount of money. The base e39 transmission does not mount up to the S62 V8 in the M5, so it would need custom adapters to fit, a custom driveshaft would be needed, and adapters like the Guibo disc would need to be modified to work along with the driveshaft. At the very least you're looking at $1000 for a used e39 tranny w/o shipping, custom driveshafts can be had for around $500, custom fit guibo $?, all the interior mods (auto shift knob, computers, etc...), and then the labor involved. A project like that could easily reach over $5000. Not worth it IMO. The M5 is a true sports car, it wasn't meant to get a granny tranny...
***Thanks for the thumbs down :)
This has been discussed on the forums hundreds of times, I know what I'm talking about here. (answered by Ryan on April 16, 2009)
Q:
A: The earlier of these dates is the E39 model. The all new E60 model became widely available in 2005.
The standard transmission from 2005 on is automatic in effect.
It has only accelerator and brake pedals - no pedal for the clutch. This transmission is called SMG.
There is a clutch but it is operated by a system controlled by the onboard computer. You select forward or reverse with a lever like auto cars have and press the accelerator, the car goes forwards or reverses, press harder it goes faster.
It is possible to take manual control and select any of the gears for yourself. However the car does not allow choices which would harm the engine or transmission. Manual gear changes can also be made from paddles next to the steering wheel.
The manual gearbox version of the current M5 is only available in the USA. (answered by M500 on April 18, 2007)
