A: I would buy a Muncie, they were put in in about that era and could be installed without too extensive modifications. My favorite is the Muncie M22 Rockcrusher, which was made for good 1/8 mile times (fyi the gear teeth in this transmission are at less of an angle and are squared off; this allows the transmission to lock into gears harder with less chances of tearing it up). You could also use a M20 or M21. All of which are reliable transmissions. The hardest part will be installing the clutch pedal. (answered by Adam on February 11, 1407)
