You Ask We Answer

Q:

Are the 400 pontiac engines of the 60s/70s the same as/interchangeable with the 60s/70s buick 400 engines?

Im considering buying a 69 buick skylark and just want to know if a pontiac 400 will fit in easily with little/no modification in place of the buick 400.
(asked by Willy p on June 12, 2009)

A: Unfortunately not, I had a big block trans am and found a 455 oldmobile and it wouldn't interchange, actually each manufaturer had difference specs, you might get it to work but not becuase they were made the same. (answered by Luke on June 12, 2009)

Q:

putting a buick 400 in a chevelle?

so, i have a 1969 chevelle without an engine and transmission. I havent done much with cars. Now my buddy has a 400 engine out of a 1967 buick gs. i was gonna rebuild that engine and either have a turbo 350 or 400, or he also has a munci 4 speed he could sell me. i was just wondering if the engine would work with those transmissions, i know they both are gm's, but i just want to know other peoples opinions
in response, so i figured id have to change the engine mountings, but the transmission would work, it is out of a chevy, but everything else would be fine as long as the engine is mounted properly, is that correct
(asked by Jake on March 14, 2009)

A: At that time GM used 2 different transmission mountings. There was Chevy, or Buick Olds & Pontiac. You can use either trans, it just needs to have come from a Buick Olds Or Pontiac to fit your Buick motor. (answered by calculus on March 14, 2009)

Q:

I am looking at buying a 1973 Buick Riviera Boatail with a 455 engine and a 400 trans, is this a good set up?

I want to buy a reliable classic car. Which are the best?
(asked by thecrusher007 on April 05, 2007)

A: It certainly *can* be....depends on what shape it is in now and what's been done/altered. Just remember we are talking about a 34 year old car here, so depending on how well it was maintained, it may need some TLC...

Big block - just make sure gas mileage is not one of your concerns....they are thirsty beasts! (answered by Dallas_Gay on April 05, 2007)
