Reviews of new pop, country/blues, jazz and classical releases

"I got me a deuce and a quarter, babe / She will ride you right," John Hiatt boasts on "Detroit Made," singing of General Motors' Buick Electra 225. JOHN HIATT "Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns" (New West, 3 1/2 stars). "Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns" shows Hiatt's muse to be as sharp as ever. Amid another earthy amalgam of rock, soul, blues and country, Hiatt still writes about restless, haunted, and on-the-edge souls with the penetrating power of someone who's been there. ("Have you ever been broken, really broken. But "I Love That Girl" is unabashedly upbeat, and the somber remembrance of 9/11 that closes the album, "When New York Had Its Heart Broke," ends on a note of stubborn resilience.

Q:

How to make a buick electra have better suspension and aerodynamics?

I got a 76 buick electra, and its gonna be racin in a trailer race, but i wanna dominate, and i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on how to make it faster and handle better

Itll be running on a 3/8th mile with alot of banking, so if you have any suggestions that would be appreciated

A: You will make a huge gain in handling performance by installing aftermarket replacement Bilstein shocks. They don't list a shock for the '76 Electra in their aftermarket application guide, but I'd check to see if maybe the Bilstein replacement for the ''65 through '90 Caprice (F4-B46-1104-H) for the front, and (F4-B46-0929-HO) fpr the rear, might work.

Here's how to figure it out. Remove one of the Electras shocks from both the front and the rear. You are going to compare them to some pictures on Bilstein's website.

Go to http://bilsteinus.com/motorsports-june08 .pdf and scroll down to page 8 and 9. At the bottom of page 8 you'll see the pictures of the different mounting confiburations, and how to measure them. Then look at page 9. Bilstein's stock mount race shock AK1053, uses the same body as the Caprice front (F4-B46-1104-H). Their rear race shock, AK1044 uses the (F4-B46-0929-HO) body. Compare the lengths and mounts against the shocks you take off of the Electra. Maybe they'll work, maybe not. You should be able to tell by making this comparison. If they'll bolt up, and you want to win, they'll be worth the investment. After the race, take them off and recover most of your money selling them on ebay.

Back in the 90's 10k to win Enduro races were popular at tracks around the country. One of the best kept secrets used by the guys who won the big bucks were the Bilsteins.

Good luck. (answered by Lt. Guidestone on July 26, 2009)

Q:

How rare was my 89 buick electra?

Since the electra was only made up to the 90s, i have a hard time finding any information about that specific year and make. Infact, I have a hard time even finding pictures of it.
Which leads me to wonder and ask how rare is an 89 buick electra?
(asked by mehl on September 14, 2007)

A: I just did a search for 1989 Buick Electra, and found info about it. The '89 Buick Electra isn't a very common car, but not very rare. So many late '80's cars have already gone to the junkyards, so that's why you don't see so many. And it's doubtful that there will ever be much of a collector's interest in the late '80's Buicks. Look for the Buick Club of America, that's where you will find the most info. (answered by mustang63b on September 15, 2007)
