Vintage 240Z: Not Quite Original, But Who Cares?

The car was light and sleek like a racer and many were turned into race cars and campaigned in Sports Car Club of America competition and with other sanctioning groups. I recently spotted this red Datsun 240Z in a parking garage near the office. But purists don’t seem to raise much fuss when this happens to an old Z. But the 240Z has never been especially popular among collectors despite its beautiful shape and the sensation it caused when new. With many 40-year-old collectible cars these types of modifications would make one cringe.

You Ask We Answer

Q:

Datsun 240z. Is it worth it?

I'm thinking of purchasing a 1971 Datsun 240z for 10g. Main selling points are: Has a 2.4 liter engine, rebuilt engine, new paint, new windshield, new interior, new rear brakes &struts, high performance clutch, headers, turbo exhaust, electronic ignition, high performance cam, oversized pistons and radiator, external cooling fan, chrome dipped wheels, fully adjustable front end.

Is it worth it?

Oh yea, I also can't seem to find what kind of gas mileage the '71 240z gets. anyone know?
Making this car my daily driver.
(asked by El Ditchero on December 23, 2007)

A: If you just need a daily-driver, then you can find many reliable cars, with warranty, for 10 grand. But you sound more like a car lover/enthusiast who wants a daily driver that is also COOL. If you love this Z and if you have gotten it checked with a good mechanic, then make the purchase. But don't make the purchase unless you are 100% sure that you will be satisfied with the car. I HOPE THIS ANSWER HELPED, AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DREAM MACHINE PURCHASE. (answered by JOE on December 23, 2007)
