Reliant, at the time, made two basic types of cars: three-wheeled economy cars and higher-end sports cars , both fiberglass-bodied and normally powered by Ford engines. For its part, Reliant, being something of a bit player in the British automotive scene, wisely sought out new, untapped niches, one of which was providing engineering and design services to countries looking to develop a sort of ready-made car... Reliant was a pretty sensible choice for Turkey-- earlier, the British firm had helped Israel start a homegrown car industry with the Carmel and the Sussita designed for Autocars Co. , and fiberglass construction was ideal for a country without a... The design Reliant came up with for the Turks was, unsurprisingly, a fiberglass-bodied, Ford-powered car dubbed the Anadol, which sounds like (and apparently is) a modern pharmaceutical. The Turks, of course, weren't going to let one simple, embarrassing disaster keep them down, and in the mid-1960s, they contracted Britain's Reliant to produce a prototype for their next locally produced car.
