What changes in the Datsun 280z caused the rise in horsepower from 1975 to 1977?
In 1975 the 280z was introduced with the fuel injected L28 straight six. It was rated at 149 horsepower. It stayed the same for 1976 but in 1977 the horsepower went up to 170. Does anyone know what was changed to raise the horsepower in 1977? I can't find any info on this anywhere. Thanks. (asked by David on May 22, 5696)

The 1976 Datsun 280Z was unchanged except for a voltmeter replacing the ammeter, but in 1977, a 5-speed manual finally became optional. The overdrive-5th gearbox cost $165 over the standard-equipment 4-speed. Although engine specifications were unchanged, horsepower increased to 170 at 5600 rpm (answered by sleepydo on May 22, 3203)

A: After 34 years things get old. If the rubber boot is torn out to the air flow meter motor will try to start but not have enough flow to keep the fuel pump contact closed inside the meter. Other things are the plugs on the distributor corroded or loose. (answered by on May 22, 6076)

A: 280Zs didn't come with power steering! The 1979 ^ 280ZXs had two types of power steering both of which would be difficult if even at all possibele to put in a S30 because of the location and design of the components. The first 280ZXs had worm and roller power steering. I guess you could count those out because that would be a step backwards in my opinion. I don't know when the changeover took place but the later 280ZXs did have rack and pinion power steering but the rack is located behind the front axle unlike the 280Z where it is in front.
