Q:
When is exhaust gas supposed to flow into the BPT/CAC valve on a 1979 Datsun l20b?
There is a tube on the part the EGR valve bolts to that goes up to the base of the BPT/CAC valve where the exhaust is supposed to push while the vacuum pulls from the top and that is supposedly going to gate the vacuum into the EGR valve so more exhaust can flow into the intake.Is it supposed to flow:
a) always;
b) when the engine is cold?
c) When the engine is warm?
d) during accelleartion?
e) during decelleration?
f) during idle?
g) during highway speed travel?
etc...
The tube was missing on my 620 pickup when I bought it, but now it is gone and before I replace it I want to know if it is going to function properly.

A: Corrosion is a big problem with those tubes, exhaust gases eat them up on a regular basis. They went to a backpressure transducer to better regulate the flow of exhaust gases into the intake manifold (NOX control) during cruise conditions and upon medium to hard acceleration (when NOX formation is at it's peak).
It will modulate the flow as it was designed once you install the tube, it may not be working at all without it. (answered by bmwrider001 on February 09, 6642)
