Early the next morning the submarine that was being pulled by a tug slipped through the canal with nary a curious onlooker in sight. But the German killer submarine U-505 failed to garner much interest as it tied up for the night at the eastern entrance of the canal. According to the Standard-Freeholder report, only about 100 curious residents bothered to make their way to the canal bank. A piece of Second World War history made its way through Cornwall Canal on May 1954. The U-505 was captured by the U. S. Navy on June 4, 1944 off the coast of Africa. The submarine was en route to its final resting place at the Chicago Museum of Science.
