Dream Cruise Snapshot: Pooches Love Cars, Too

Vehicle:  1975 Fiat 124 Sport Spider convertible. I am not a big car person, but I just love that for one week a year, people from all over the state, the nation, even the world, come to my little piece of the planet. My husband, Brian, and I love that the back seat is just big enough to fit Jake and Mason, our two Lab-mix rescue dogs. I consider this the poor man's Austin-Healey. I have always wanted an Austin-Healey, but they are so expensive. I love the activity, the noise and all the festivities. We are so lucky they let us drive  their  car.

Q:

1978 Fiat 124 Spider key snapped, what do I do?

1978 Fiat Spider 124 key snapped in lock, both pieces are out and the key teeth are fine. How do I get this fixed? Please help! Thank you!

Q:

How reliable and fixable is a 1987 Fiat 124 Spider?

I'm looking to buy a used car and am not a car savvy person so any information would be great.

A: They never made an 87 Spider. Fiat production stopped with the 82 model year. Pinninfarina continued production for a few years more, but that was it.
I assume it was a 1977 since it was a 124? Anyways parts are pretty easy to get, but finding a mechanic that can service it is not. Most owners tend to do their own work, but really great mechanics who cater to classics are around, but hard to find. If you really don't feel like messing with a sometimes temper mental car or getting your hands dirty get a Miata. Owning a Fiat is very satisfying though. This is 20 years of experience speaking. Never broke down once(where I couldn't get it home) in daily driving. I wont do that any more though being that these cars are getting rare. Now, I just restore them and play with them on sunny days. That's why I suggest a Miata.

Q:

variants of the Fiat 124?

when I was growing up my dad had a Fiat 124 spider I have seen that there was a sports coup and an incredibly ugly sedan version that the Russians built as vav-2101 and Lada-1200. Did the differing variants differ mechanically or did they simply slap a different body on a similar chassis and engine?
