A: It can be OK to buy a salvage car, but that's too expensive. 5K and needing at least 2K to fix? what if it's higher? And when you're done, it won't be worth 9K because nobody will pay as much for a wrecked and repaired car as they would for a similar car that hadn't been wrecked.
Also, check with your insurance company on this, they might tell you than they'll only pay 1/2 of book value if it gets wrecked or stolen or whatever because it was a salvage car.
From what I've seen, the value of a salvage/repaired car is 50-70% or what it would otherwise be, so if you really think you can fix it for 2K, offer them 3, maybe 3.5K for it (of course after you ask your insurer about their policies on salvage cars).
