Tom Walsh: Sergio Marchionne warns about rising Chinese auto industry

TRAVERSE CITY -- While others among the 850 people at an automotive gathering here this week talked about July vehicle sales or this summer's UAW bargaining, Sergio Marchionne fretted about the prospect of China a few years hence wreaking havoc... Marchionne, 59, CEO of both Fiat and Chrysler and philosophizer on subjects ranging from worker dignity to corporate humility, is "usually four steps ahead of everybody else," said Chrysler's purchasing chief Dan Knott. He said he is already concerned by the emergence of Chinese brands in Brazil, a big market for Fiat. In his riff on China at the Center for Automotive Research's annual conference, Marchionne sounded an ominous warning to corporate leaders and policy makers about its coming impact on the global economy.

Q:

Anybody know where I can find a Fiat 850 coupe?

I once owned a 1969 Fiat 850 coupe. It only had a 900cc engine in it, but the red line was something like 8000 rpm. It was the most funnest car I ever drove. In the snow I could steer it with the rear tires. Unfortunately, I haven't found any on the internet. What am I doing wrong? Maybe being a Fiat, they've all turned to dust. I kept repairing mine until the wiring harness caught fire one day. That was the last straw. Now I want it back. Also, it should get great gas mileage; being so light and all.
In advance, thanks for any help you can give me.

A: I've been looking for an 850 coupe for 10 years with no success. It was a great car to drive. I guess that they've all dissolved. (answered by Robert E. Lee on May 02, 2007)

Q:

I live in Washington State and own a Seat 600D .Will a Fiat 850 transaxle fit it?

It is a 1969 model. I am looking for other US Seat 600D owners.

A: I have a '58 Fiat 600 sedan, and I also looked into putting an 850 in it. Here's what I was told: You can do it, and lots of people have, but it's not just a "bolt-on" job. You have to cut away some metal from the car body to make room for it, and modify some other stuff, and you also have to use the 850's engine because the original 600 engine spins the opposite direction. I eventually decided to convert mine to an electric motor and nevermind the gas engines. But the bottom line is, yes it's possible and the 850 engine/tranny will add a lot of "zoom-zoom" to your classic car. (answered by dobielustra on April 27, 2008)

Q:

The worst car that I ever owned was a Fiat 850 spider . What was yours?

Fix it again Turkey
My first car was a GMC Rambler and my sister had a Dodge Dart.
