Q:

Why Does My Fiat Punto Drift/Fishtail On Wet Round Abouts?

Even at less than 25 mph, the tires all have at least 7mm tread left but are unfortunately different treads at all four tires. As it has happened before I have taken to going very slowly on roundabouts but yesterday it did it so badly that I was at about 70 degrees to the roundabout. Why could this be happening? If it helps it is a MkII 1.2 8v on steel rims. Anyone?
(asked by electro-boy on September 08, 2008)

A: There can be a number of reason as to why this is happening.

To make it easier we will take driving style out of the equation and concentrate on mechanical issues only.

First - design.
Front wheel drive cars have their suspensions set up differently to that of real wheel drive cars.
In order to control body roll (sway) the rear suspension has greater roll stiffness compared to the front.
If stiffness was added to the front , it would lead to excessive wheel spin when accelerating through corners.

(If you see a FWD race car cornering hard you may see it lift the rear inside wheel completely off the ground.)

So stiffness is added to the back , to the non driving wheels.

For most situations in road cars this is OK., however , if you combine that with narrow low performance tires , and aggressive driving styles, and in low grip conditions (wet , icy , sandy road conditions) the chance of a rear slide is quite high.

FWD's most often will plow through a corner at the limit of adhesion (because of the weight in the front end) and don't often slide in the back , but when they do , they can be hard to catch before going all the way around.

Next - mechanical.
Different brand tires will have different grip levels.
Having different maximum grip levels at each corner of the car is not a very bad thing , until you reach that limit.
It is then that you will not be able to predict which wheel will lose traction first - until you experience it.

Tires for small cars are rarely good performers.
Owners of small cars find it hard to justify paying the cost for a good quality tire., so often , budget (low grip) tires are fitted.
With tires - You get what you pay for , and you pay for what you get.

Shock absorbers can also affect grip.
Shocks wear out slowly so it can be hard to detect when they have worn out - however if a wheel is chattering over the ground because the shock isn't controlling it , then total loss of grip is about to happen.
Shock absorbers can be worn out in as little as 4 years.

Alignment-- Some front wheel drive cars specify toe and camber settings for the rear suspension.(IRS only)
These must be set right or all sorts of weird handling can result.
If a FWD car has a solid beam axle in the rear (not IRS) then these usually are set up 'zero' on all angles.
If suspension joints are worn out , these may cause negative toe (or toe out) in cornering , and this can feel weird , and then cause a slide from the rear.

I would replace all tires with new quality tires on alloy wheels and ---say -- 175 or 185 in width tires.
The standard 165s are too small for the weight of the car.

If this doesn't fix your problems , then suspect the shocks next.

A: here in Oz tyres have to be the same size on the same axle. Different treads are ok sometimes. Perhaps you're rear end is too light, tyres over-inflated, poor quality tyres, bad shocks? Is the road flat or cobblestones-they'll slip. dry, wet, painted or oily? Less power might help too, at modest speeds. (answered by friedach on September 08, 2008)
