Q:

Fiat Spider Starting problems?

I have an 81 Fiat Spider 2000 with a new starter, a new ignition switch, and a new battery, but sometimes when I turn the key nothing happens. I have to turn it several times before it starts, and sometimes it doesn't start at all. all of the connections are tight, and I always disconnect the battery when I'm done driving just to make sure it isn't something that's left on draining the battery. So what's wrong with my car?
(asked by Jonathan J on July 14, 2007)

A: also try replacing your ignition switch (answered by on July 14, 2007)

A: Check to see if your car has a "Starter Relay", or a Solenoid.
Some cars have this built into the starter, others have it mounted on the firewall. Other than that, make sure your "Neutral Safety switch" is working. (answered by HowlnWoof on July 14, 2007)

Q:

What are some of the better fuel mileage sport cars or two seater roadsters?

Over all, not just the newer cars.
I like the two seater roadsters and the back seat sport cars such as the 1979 Fiat Spider 2000. (which I had at one time)
I am considering a possible vehicle change, so I want some input from other enthusiasts.

Some of my favorite cars were the 50's MG products.
(MGTD and MGA)

A: Still owning 2 Miata's I will have to recommend them
Both are first model years, and have shown me they are reliable.
If you read much on the subject you will Find that Miata has set the standard for handling. As for MPG, we still get 30 every day, and the last 300 mile trip, we got 34 MPG.
Bang for the buck, joy of driving, every review rates it at the top. While there are faster cars, they are not cheaper to own and/or operate. Properly driven, not many can catch it on a winding road.
A sheer joy to own. (answered by teamepler@verizon.net on May 31, 2007)

Q:

My 1979 fiat won't start.?

My 1979 fiat spider 2000, won't start. I put the key in, and it cranks, and the engine turns, but won't start. Yes, there is gas in the car. Yes, the battery is fully charged. I just put in a new alternator. The problem that may be related to this is all the gauges like the gas, oil, heat, etc; do not work. I checked all the fuses, and they are good. What would cause all the gauges not to work, and maybe causing the car not to start? Would the coil be the problem?. Maybe the ignition switch? The lights do turn on.
(asked by kikisgiftshop.com on February 10, 3338)

A: Unless your competent at tracing wiring with a volt meter and checking it against the cars circuit diagram in the workshop manual you will be in for a hard time.

First off I would unplug the HT lead that goes from the ignition coil to the distributer cap - AT the distributer cap.
Place the end of that cable (which is still connected to the ignition coil) about 1/3 inch away from some body sheet metal work .. like the inside fender panels.

Have an assistant crank the engine (don't pump the gas) for a few seconds and you should see some good solid sparks from that cables end going to the body.

If you don't see the sparks , then check to see if you have 12V at the coils PINK wire connection. (when the ignition switch is ON) .

If 12 volts CAN'T be found , then there is a break in the wiring , or the ignition switch is bad.

If there IS 12V there , then the electronic ignition module might be bad , the coil might be bad , the ignition HT cables might be bad or on the wrong cylinders , or someone has incorrectly altered the ignition timing , or perhaps some other unknown a mechanical or fuel problem.

For the gage problem , if fuse 1 is GOOD , then it puts the focus more on the ignition switch for BOTH problems.

Remove the plastic shroud over the steering column to get to the back of the IGN switch.
You will finds its 4 wire connector.
BROWN , RED , BLACK and that PINK wire is there.

Check the BLACK wire for 12volts.

If NO then there is a break between it and the battery.
If YES , then check that PINK wire at the switch , it should have 12V at the 'run' and 'start' positions.

If NO , then the switch is bad.

If YES ,(unlikely) then the PINK wire is damaged between here and the coil., and the gage problem is unrelated.

As you can see , its quite involved. (answered by Wise Old Man on February 10, 9236)
