LA Auto Show Recap: The 10 Best New Cars

We know, the auto industry is in dire straits. No one has money to buy cars and governments are clamping down on emissions. Yeah, yeah. But the show must go on, and so it did last week at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show . The first auto show to kick off the North American auto show circuit provided us with a bunch of new concepts that make us believe the future of cars isn’t so bleak after all. Take a look at our 10 favorite new cars from the ‘09 LA Auto Show. Maybe you’ll start to believe, too. Either that, or make you at least want to give up your bus pass…

WHY WE WANT TO DRIVE : We were all a little sad when we learned that Audi wasn’t going to build the R8 V12 TDI concept we saw at the ‘08 North American International Auto Show: it combined one the best looking and best handling sports cars with the awesome competition bred V12 diesel engine. However, once we saw their E-Tron concept, we kinda forgot that whole thing ever happened. Like the V12 TDI, the E-Tron is an attempt at a green sports car: it’s powered by four electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack producing a pedestrian 313 hp but a crazy 3,319 lb-ft of torque! Yeah, you read that right.

Q:

Jaguar engine stall and coolant overflow?

I bought a 98 Jaguar xj8 today and the coolant over flowed three times but the temp. gage didn't raise to the hot level, also I was driving on the freeway around 65 mph and the engine started loosing power and after rolling for a minute the engine stalled. What's the problem and is it major?
Nickaron, it overflowed from the overflow resivror on the left lower side of the engine conpartment. I didn't check the engine before I bought it, because it sounded fine and the oil level & color was good.

Lester, I don't know.

A: Check your radiator if its clog. The water might not circulating properly. Also check your water and coolant level. its should be in the proper level. You can remove air in your radiator by removing the cap while in idle for about 3 to 5 minutes then putting the cap back. In this way you are removing air causing to much pressure and overheating. Hope this helps! (answered by Mikaela P on September 23, 2009)

A: Where did it overflow from? There could be air in the cooling system. When its cold, take the radiator cap off and run the engine until the coolant gets to the top of the spout and then put the cap back on. The engine just could be bad, did you check it out before you bought it? (answered by Nickaroni on September 23, 2009)

Q:

How easy would it be to swap the 2.4l engine in my father's MK2 Jaguar for a larger replacement?

I am aware that the MK2 Jaguar came with engine sizes up to 3.8 and that these larger models are more desireable- and perkier- than my father's 1961 2.4l.

Would it be a relatively straight job for a mechanic to do, swapping the engines over? What else would be involved, and could you give a rough idea of UK costs if we supplied the replacement engine?

Thanks!
(asked by Dan on September 10, 4300)

A: It's a relatively easy job, straight forward nuts and bolts, but, different exhaust system, engine mounts, different clutch,if fitted, auto box is another matter, depending on which carbs it may need harness mod's.relatively simple as it's pre injection. But overall it's the same body shell so everything is available. As for how much I couldn't say without seeing the car,at that age all kinds factors can crop up from rust to unknown mod's.I'd also be happier uprating the radiator and front brakes and suspension springs, more weight and power see?You supplying the motor would concern me,if it's a dog I would still want payed for the fitting, make sure it's a good engine or you could end up paying for it to be changed twice. Q:

jaguar engine repair shop in Florida?

I have a '67 XKE with a bad engine. I need someone to overhaul the engine in Florida or sourthern Ga.
(asked by Dwight L on May 21, 2006)

A: Any repair shop that specializes in imported cars can fix it AND with Jaguar parts only. They specialize in hard to find parts, such as vintage and late model imported cars. It's their specialty.

Pleased to meet you. The jaguar XJS is my favorite car. I'm going to go way out on a limb here and presume that the Jag is one of your favorites too. They're just hot. What a peice of equipment.

The beautiful and sexy design of them makes me want to make love to it. LOL. (answered by Molly on May 21, 2006)
