Q:
Looking for ideas on instlling a1974 Mercede Benz 240D motor and transmission in my Jeep CJ8?
Both the jeep and the diesel are in line with automatics. The diesel a 4cyl., jeep 6cyl.. My real concerns are the weight difference, if there is much ,and adapting the transfer case. I am looking for any ideas no matter how trivial.(asked by Winnebago7030 on March 06, 2008)
A: Never seen a Mercedes diesel swap in a Wrangler, but it's entirely possible. You may have to run a divorce-mount transfer case which would probably be the biggest overall mod.
The Benz engines are heavy, I don't know the weight of the old 240 engine but newer 6-cyl Benz diesels run well over 800 pounds and up to 1,200 pounds for the Benz truck 6-cyls (the Jeep 4.0 is 515 lbs) so you may need some front suspension boosts.
I put a couple of links below to some diesel swaps on YJ's might give you some ideas.
Jump onto Jeepforum (link below) if you get into this project and give a rundown of the project, I'm sure there's lots of folks who would be interested in seeing how you do it. Take lots of pics:-) (answered by Steve A aka StvDiego on March 06, 2008)
Q:
Why does my 82 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler grind a little sometimes when going into first gear?
I have an 1982 Jeep Scrambler CJ8. From a stand still, sometime when I put it into first gear, I get a little grinding. It is a 258 6 cylinder, hooked to a T5 5 speed. The clutch does not appear to be slipping. One website said that the linkage rod might need to be adjusted. I currently have 1 1/4" of free play, and Chilton's specifies "about 1 inch". Does it seem like I need to reduce the freeplay?First gear is not synchronized; the previous owner said it never has been synchronized since he bought it and had it rebuilt. Reverse and shifting to other gears is fine. Transmission is full of gear oil; although it has a slight leak.
(asked by Michael_Samuels on February 27, 2007)
A: 1st off, the freeplay should be around 1", but 1 1/4 isn't going to hurt it that bad, you might want to try adjusting your pedal and see what happens.
2nd, first gear would have to be synchronized or it would not go into reverse..hence 1st/reverse syncho...same synchro!!!
My advise, try the adjustment 1st and then if it still grinds, take it to a trusted transmission builder and have him take a good hard look at 1st gear for missing/worn teeth and its synchro. (answered by num1huckfinn on February 27, 2007)
Q:
where can i find jeep cj8 traditional bikini top color (dixie flag)?
(asked by jcurious2002 on April 13, 2006)
A: Go to jc whitney and in the search field put in zx505891 and they also have the dixie horn on sale too. And when you buy the bikini top make sure that your windshield header is in good shape (and that you have one). It is what the bikini or the soft top connects into in the front.
