Land Rover to ditch Defender?

However, what has always put softies like me off owning one is the perceived unreliability and high running costs of owning one. The Defender fills this and should not be confused with the premium brands of Range Rover and Discovery which are in essence luxury cars and rarely see of road duty even though they are capable. I live in a rural community and the Defender is still prevalent, if it goes I doubt very much that the farming community with look at the other Landrover offerings with the same eagerness. The serious off road market where the Defender resides , such as emergency services, aid agencies, farmers etc. Now, some LR owners will no doubt question this but I am sure I am not alone in mentally picturing myself spending many hours repairing driveshaft/transmission/electrical/fuel faults on the hard shoulder of some godforsaken byeway, many miles from... Why History matters I have owned Defenders for years and they fufill the job I need to do admirably. s no point in...

You Ask We Answer

Q:

How realistic is it to use a 1970's Land Rover Series III as a daily driver?

I have always had a bit of a hankering after the old Land Rovers but, not being mechanically minded, I have always been a little put off. The thing is that I now have more money than when I was at Uni and so I'm now in a position to make my dream happen.

However, what I would love to know from experienced owners is just how practical a Series III is as an everyday car. I don't go off-roading but do occasionally make long trips along the motorways. I'm still no more mechanically minded than I was before and so always trust my car to the professionals when it comes to repairs and servicing. My car history to date has always been modern road cars with all the mod-cons, so I know I would be in for a culture shock. I can't justify one as a second car, so I need to be certain that it's going to be right for me as my main car.

I just love these rugged old cars and think that they are really cool. Should I let my heart rule my head? All help and counsel will be gratefully received.

A: I would go ahead and do it. I always say, "You only live once!"
My experience comes from a Range Rover but, I have talked with many older Land Rover owners. The Series III is mechanically reliable and simple to maintain. You should be able to have your LR serviced at just about any independent mechanic. The only thing that may not be great is the electronics. LR has never been good with electronics. The Series III, however, has very little in terms of electronics. (answered by vrindner on February 11, 540)

Q:

Series 3 land rover mpg?

I would like to get a series III land rover. Does anyone know what the fuel economy is like for the different engines?
(asked by andyhpt1982 on August 07, 2006)

A: none of them will give great fuel economy , go for a diesel & run it on old cooking oil . or even new cooking oil , its still cheaper than pump fuel (answered by grrraeme2000 on August 07, 2006)

Do you think the car you drive reflects your politics?

Also, what car DO you drive, and what are your politics?

Just curious.

I drive an 88 Volvo "Brick" - a Pre-Ford Volvo, and a 77 Land Rover Series III 109 - also pre-Ford. And I'm a conservative.
