You Ask We Answer

Q:

Do you think a Mazda miata is a sports car?

The brother thinks there are no sports cars under $50,000. I said "How about the older miata, it was in the top sports cars of the decade in the 90's." He said "Nope, a miata isn't a sports car."
Dave you just proved everyone's opinions wrong with even more opinions... (Yes d david 28 is my brother)
(asked by Steven D on May 06, 2008)

A: Lots of cars are "sporty" cars, but the Miata is truly a sports car. The handling is superior to many $50,000+ cars out there.

Regarding the height "issue," a 6'4" basketball player at my college owned a Miata and he said he had no problems getting in and out. And there is a ton of legroom inside.

The Miata isn't just sporty, it's a true sports car. Drive a Miata. Take it on a mountain road. Test the handling. Then tell me it isn't a sports car. Your comments regarding performance lead me to believe that you've never driven one. (answered by Dave C on May 06, 2008)

A: I'd consider it a sports car, but I'm a girl so he wouldn't think my opinion would count ;P (answered by Mel on May 06, 2008)

Q:

Do you think a Mazda Miata is a good car?

I just want to know if this is a good functioning car. Is it good in gas mileage? Does it have any main issues that I should look out for? Things like that. It's going to be my first car and I want a car that is a 2 seater and is stick and that is cheap to take care of. So is this a good car for that?

A: Mazda Miatas are great cars and I've owned several. They are very hearty and have been known to last over 250,000 with proper maintenance. The engine the miata uses take forced induction very well. They are popular on many track circuits as well. Here is the breakdown.

First Generation: (by far the easiest to modify)
90-93: 1.6l engine
94-95: 1.8l engine, Mazda beefed up the engine so expect to get about 10-15 more horsepower out of these cars. They were still OBDI and didn't fall under the same emissions controls.
96-97: Mazda again beefed up the engine but not by much. The car has OBDII and some extra components for the new emissions controls.

Second Generation:
99-00: Mazda completely changed the body and did away with the pop-up headlights. Still uses a 1.8l engine but ran about 10 more horsepower than the first generation.
01-05 Mazda beefed up the cars look and made the 1.8l more powerful but not by much. Also Mazda introduced 01-05 Mazdaspeed models which included a turbocharger.

Third Generation
06-09: Mazda introduced a brand new 2.0l engine and produced about 20 more horsepower than the second generation miata. Although they are faster, many complain that it doesn't handle as well as the first generation. (answered by William M on February 10, 9723)

A: cool cars im a mechanic and ive not heard of any known problems (answered by David D on February 10, 5041)

Q:

Mazda Miata: girl car or not?

A friend of mine just got a brand new Mazda Miata. Is that a girl car or not? Just a quick survey.

He is married, without kids, and has two other cars.
(asked by But why is the rum always gone? on August 12, 2006)

A: Definately not a "girly car". Go to a local SCCA Solo II competition and see what I mean. Absolutely top notch cars for competition. (answered by ? on August 12, 2006)
