Our on-again, off-again romance with the internal combustion engine has taken a decidedly terminal turn for the worse this winter. Our once comely, little Mazda Protege now sits all-but-abandoned in our driveway between eight-foot-tall walls of snow
We inherited family cars like a Mazda Protégé. It had lots of power. I had a Volvo, which was nice but falling apart. Then we inherited from my wife's family their cast-off Subarus, which are really nice. But I still pine for the Chrysler.

Q:
Is the computer chip actually part of a 97 Mazda Protege engine?
6 months ago Mazda put a new engine in my Protege and yesterday the check engine light came on. This past week I had noticed the car smelled like it was running hot but the indicators on the panel were all fine. When the light came on we noticed in my parking spot that it had been leaking some oil. We called Mazda and they said it was OK to drive and brought it to them the next day. The light had gone out after driving it for 5 minutes but after about 10 minutes when I had to slow down and pay at the toll booth it started to pour out white smoke from the tail pipe for a few seconds. Mazda tells us that it is the computer chip and that has nothing to do with the engine itself, so therefore, it is not covered by the warranty. The oil leak was caused by a dirty oil filter he said and could be fixed by an oil change, which was do, but had just been done by them and was not that overdue and not that many miles have been put on it. I'm just afraid they are taking advantage of me. (asked by Chaddy on August 11, 2006)
A: It does sound like they are taking advantage of you. Wehn a check engine light comes on, the computer is being told that there is a problem with one of the sensors inputs, or reading. So the light is set on to inform you of a problem. Hence, spend the money and get the check engine codes...etc etc. But, for a new engine to leak oil, sounds very odd, then so does the white smoke coming out the tailpipe. Would seem that they didn't top off antifeeze properly, and had a huge airpocket, causing the light to go on. Just a guess though. I'd try another dealer, without the first ones knowledge and get a second opinion. Also, have hubby, or B/F there for back up, as it seems mechanics won't try as hard to screw people over. Hope that was a little helpful. (answered by Silverstang on August 11, 2006)
Q:
93 Mazda protege engine cuts of under 1000 rpm?
I have been experiencing unusual problem w/my:
93 protege. DOHC, engine cuts of under 1000 rpm (idle). For instance when slowing down or at TL i have to have one foot on brake and one on gas to rev the engine at 2500-3000 rpm otherwise it will cut off. Any idea or suggestion from experts out there will be appreciated. Thank You. (asked by Pdesai007 on October 29, 2007)
A: sound like you have a vacuum leak ,check your EGR valve
might be stuck open, check all your vacuum hose, PCV valve to test pull it out from the valve cover and plug with your finger then start,,,
clean your throttle body, with a rag sprayed with WD OIL SPRAY,warning don't spray inside, you ll ruin the seal wipe only ,,try not to scratch the inside....
long shot is IAC because i assume you already adjusted the idle [ Intake Air Control ]
double check your ignition timing (answered by tito on October 29, 2007)
Q:
Can a Mazda 2.5L KLZE V6 engine be dropped into a 2003 mazda protege engine bay?
Can a Mazda 2.5L KLZE V6 engine be dropped into a 2003 mazda protege engine bay?
Are the engine mounts in the same location? (asked by nvarch1 on May 12, 2007)
A: I dont believe the mounts are the same.
The KLZE is pretty vesitile
...its commonly dropped into MX-3s.
If you do go after the swap, I would suggest making your own mounts for the best fit. (answered by Nate on May 14, 2007)
