Q:
I want to put a turbo on a 1995 mazda protege lx ?
I have a manual 95 protege lx and I want to put a
turbo on. I was told that I can take a turbo off of a 95 mitsu
eclipse and weld the
exhaust on. I'm not too sure that would be a great idea. Also I was wondering the cheapest way to do this. I am going to do this no matter what and I know it would be better to get a good base car.

A: You need a turbo kit for the turbo to work and you need to have less than 60,000 miles on the engine and the most boost you could have without blowing the Protege engine is 6psi, which adds around 80HP.
Turbo Kits include intercooler, turbocharger, chip, boost controller, piping, Cold Air Intake, Waste gate actuator, and a few more parts. All of this is needed to use a turbocharger.
I have a 96 Protege DX 5 speed manual and I have wanted to turbo it since I got the car 3 years ago.
But they do not make any performance parts for this car until 2001.

Turbo Kits cost $3000. New Single Turbochargers cost $1500. (answered by C7S on January 17, 2009)
A: you have a major problem there, you are looking to do it the cheapest possible way but there is not cheap way to do it because you will have to spend in a new ecu
stock ecu don't support
turbo setting so you will have to spend 500 and more to buy only the racing ecu and that price don't include the installation and programming
about the welding... you can do it and probably the only way to kept the job the cheapest possible

Q:
What would be the approximate cost and feasibility of a custom turbo kit for a 2001 mazda protege?
I am fairly good mechanically and understand the basics of a turbo system. As far as engine management goes I am good with computers. Basically I want to know what the actual individual parts will cost (range) and whether it is feasable for someone other than an authorized mechanic to install it. I want to make and install a system that can handle at the most 8 or 9 psi. becuase I don't want to deal with the internals? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A: I would say about $3-4K. Make sure you know all what is involved like plumbing oil and fuel which will need an adjustable regulator maybe heavier injectors, all the tubing and electronics. Do you want an inter-cooler?
This project would be quite the undertaking and could not be done overnight, but if you got the time and money it would be great project. (answered by Royal S on January 27, 2007)
