2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring SE, an Autoweek Drivers Log Car Review

The curves and the aesthetics of the Sonata and Elantra sedans are stunning, and that language isn't quite here. NEWS EDITOR GREG MIGLIORE: This Touring edition of the Elantra just doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the stylish Hyundai lineup. Still, it was enough to get the Elantra Touring moving at a respectable pace. Of course, that's because this Touring is based off the previous-generation Elantra. The manual allows the driver to wring the most out of this car, which, at 138 hp, isn't much. The five-speed manual is kind of fun in a joystick sort of manner.

Q:

Why is my Mazda 2002 Protege5 shaking and how do I get it fixed?

My Mazda 2002 Protege5 just starting shaking while idling. It has 68,000 miles on it and was fine up until now, but recently just started shaking a lot more noticably, both when idling and when driving. What do I need to do about this? On a related note, is there any sort or routine maintenance I should be getting, beyond the typical oil changes every 3k? First time owning a car and don't want this thing to break on me!

A: Could be a bunch of things. I don't have my manual handy. I have 30K on mine...all good so far. I own a 2003...but it's pouring rain out there. I believe you are due for a valve adjustment. A timing belt? water/ pump change is also really close...if not overdue. Spark plug change is recommended at every 30,000 miles. Hey...maybe that's it,and you'll get lucky! Watch that timing belt thing though...cause you'll be walking for sure. It might not sound right, but I guarantee that you want to get your water pump changed-out when you do the timing belt. It's cheaper in the long run.Thank me later. A: Im not too sure but it could have to do with your fuel injectors. I had the same problem with my 2008 ford f-250. Not even sure if they could be linked, but its something to look into (answered by Cory T on August 29, 2008)

Q:

What are the normal warning lights on a Mazda Protege5 when you put the key in?

I own a 2003 Mazda Protege 5.

I am not sure if it is normal or not, but when I put the key in and turn it to the ACC position, after the 6 seconds when all the warning lights stay on, the Check Engine and the Oil Pressure lights stay on until i start the engine.

Once I start the engine however, they turn off.

I would like to know if this is normal, or if they should not be on EVER (except the 6-second period when all warning lights are on).
Right, I'm sorry, it's not ACC. It's the position where you have current to everything but you haven't started the engine yet.
(asked by maniac_2oo4 on March 11, 2007)

A: Youre ok in the position prior to starting.
If the lights are on while the car is running I would get it checked out.
So, if the lights turn off when you start the car...youre fine. (answered by Nate on March 15, 2007)

A: Actually, you're rotating it to IGN (ignition).

Accessory is backwards one click.
There should be NO lights in acc. (answered by Mr. KnowItAll on March 11, 2007)

Q:

Why is my 2003 Mazda Protege5 turning over and over when I try to start it?

I recently got the main fuse replaced because it wasn't starting at all (battery was tested OK and would only start after jumping it). Since then, it has a hard time starting, especially when it's been sitting awhile. It turns over and over and finally catches. It drives like normal, no signs of a poor battery. Could the mechanic have knocked something loose when we replaced the fuse?

A: You shouldn't wait 6 years to get a tune up. Have the car tuned up, or at least put in new spark plugs. You can have it OBD2 checked to see if there are any trouble codes telling of bad parts or conditions. (answered by don r on February 10, 6806)
