Q:

what is the best exhaust for my mazda rx8?

i like the sound of the b&b exhaust but i would like to know which exhaust system gives the most hp and torque to the wheels. also if i bought just mufflers would that be the same as a full exhaust? i have 2.5 piping already, and the b&b kit comes with 2.5. so whats the difference if i got the kit or just mufflers
(asked by BryanG. on February 11, 9010)

A: There is MUCH more to tuning an exhaust system for a Naturally Aspirated motor than increasing the pipe size and throwing on high-flow mufflers. Doing the above can end up lowering your HP and/or torque just as easily as increasing it.

NA motors create exhaust pulses which travel down the entire exhaust line. At certain points these pulses will reflect back up the system and the frequencies at which this happens and how they meet on-coming pulses drastically effects total HP and torque numbers, and at what RPM's these numbers are created.

A properly tuned exhaust system will allow the best power production within specific rev ranges. The odds of you "lucking" into this by making you own are slim.

And don't believe the marketing hype many manufacturers state in their literature. Some are true only under a small set of perfect conditions...and some are just outright lies couched in the phrase "will make up to XX more HP" "Up to" allows them to say just about anything.

Mazda did a very good job of tuning the RX8's exhaust and a standard Cat-back upgrade "may" give you 4-5 HP.

I'd advise checking the forums at:

to see actual dyno results of all the various units out there. (answered by cnshinn on February 11, 8590)

A: Putting just exhaust on your car will more than likely hurt the amount of horse power you get, plugs and intake and exhaust don't do much for you car. You really need to turbo your RX-8 before you do anything else. (answered by Jordan H on February 11, 6112)

Q:

2004 MAZDA RX8: If i add a intake and exhaust system?

How much horsepower will i add to my car if i threw a K&N Intake and Borola Exhaust System in?
(asked by bitchennn on September 16, 2009)

A: Take a good look at all the engineering that went into that intake system, resonance chambers, air source and routing. Don't throw away a well engineer system for one of those boy racer type intakes! A K&N panel will yield enough kick that you can tell the improvement. But on a Dyno it will only be about 3 to 5 horses.
You have to be careful on exhaust modifications also. While bigger bore exhausts look great and add horse power it is not across the board. The larger the exhaust pipe the more it helps the top end at the expense of the bottom end. Which means that you would have to be up where many drivers do not want to operate (7 grand RPM or better).
In short, a K&N panel replacement filter will yield a little. The Borola exhaust will hurt off the line performance, and unless you plan on driving a lot with the engine running in excess of 6,0000 RPM don't bother. (answered by Old Man Dirt on September 17, 2009)

A: About 2 or 3. Mazda didn't leave much potential to be unlocked in the intake and exhaust, they already are pretty free-flowing. (answered by AS on September 17, 2009)

Q:

Whats the loudest exhaust system you can buy for a Mazda RX8?

I want my car to sound really loud so im wondering what exhaust system and other accessories i can buy to wake up the neighborhood. thank you
(asked by bitchennn on February 11, 9539)

A: Rotary cars do not like to be mistreated in such a manner and demand proper parts, not the el-cheapo crap exhaust you find on ebay. If you want a car to be obnoxious, go buy a honda and leave the RX8 alone. However, if you want an exhaust that won't get you pulled over by the police every 5 minutes, Racing Beat is the way to go. I have one on my FC and love it. It is reasonably quiet at idle, but lets you know of its presence as you push the tachometer higher and higher.

If you want to wake people up, rev to redline, let off for half a second and give it another rev. This will produce a catalytic converter-destroying backfire.

you should also read up at www.rx8club.com, it will get you much more acquainted with such a different vehicle that the RX8 is. (answered by Travis S on February 11, 733)
