Q:
where is the poppet valve on a 2005 Mercury 150 saltwater outboard engine?
the temperature runs high at low ideal and the water steem out the back is not so great.... when I punch it, the stream comes out better... I have been told my poppet valve may have some seaweed in it... so I need to know where the poppet valve is. thanks!(asked by jamesmarsh4 on June 12, 2008)
A: Follow your hose from your water discharge (what you see coming out when you run). That will travel somewhere to the block, on your model it may be located at that point. If not keep following the hoses. They should have a connectoin between the two banks of cylinders, at these connection points there may be a termostat that could also be your problem. one of the stats may be stuck with seaweed or sand.
The poppet valve will look like a piece of metal fastened on to the block. It will be black painted, rounded at one end, then narrowing towards the other end. There are usually three bolts around the top and three more around the lower perimeter. Its kinda shaped like the outline of a keyhole that you would see in old cartoons.
When you take this off there will be a spring and rubber ring do not lose those and remeber how it sets in there. A thermostat will be located on the motor side as well. Clean all of it, and put it back. If you damage the gasket when you take it off it will need to be replaced or it will leak. (answered by Rondo on June 12, 2008)
Q:
18 ft Bayliner mercury outboard 150 problem?
As soon as we start the boat we hear a long beep. The boat cannot over heat so quickly. Do you think it has a problem with the sensor? Any suggestions.Year 1986
(asked by gunjan22 on October 15, 2008)
A: If the temp sensor is contact type the cylinder head can get to over temp in just a couple minuets and set off the alarm. If it is an oil injected outboard , Low oil level in the oil tank. or oil pump failure, if not My advise is take it to a qualified tech and have it repaired you are dealing with some thing that could cause catastrophic failure (answered by Kilo on October 15, 2008)
