Smoke and flames were reported about 12:50 p. m. in a two-mile stretch between Spring Street in La Mesa and West Main Street in El Cajon. A pickup spewing flames ignited four brush fires along Interstate 8 Friday afternoon, bringing westbound traffic to a halt in La Mesa and El Cajon. Structures, including a Mormon church, were reported threatened near Murray Drive, and trolley service through the area was halted for half an hour, said Heartland Fire & Rescue spokesman Sonny Saghera. The pickup was reported on fire near the Grossmont Boulevard off-ramp. CHP Officer Brian Pennings said the driver had just bought the used truck and was taking it to a dealership to be checked. The truck’s catalytic converter malfunctioned, Saghera said.
The men, one in his 20s and the other in his 50s, were headed north across Second Street at the intersection with Broadway shortly before 9 p. m. Thursday when they were hit by a Mitsubishi Eclipse, according to El Cajon police Lt. Frank La Haye. The Mitsubishi’s driver stopped immediately after the crash and was cooperating with traffic investigators, La Haye said. — Two men were hospitalized with serious injuries after they were struck by a car while crossing a street in El Cajon, police said Friday. He asked anyone with information on the crash to call the El Cajon Police Department’s Traffic Division at 619-441-1632. Police did not believe the driver had been speeding or was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, he said.
