PEUGEOT 208 GTI: DRIVEN

The 106 GTI, 306GTI-6 and Rallye and of course, the daddy of them all, the 205GTI. Because the world is a better place with a proper Pug GTI in it. Because Peugeot has produced some of the iconic hot hatches over the years. What was interesting, and a bit worrying, was sitting in the press conference prior to the test drive and being told what the GTI isn't. My first 'sporty' car was a 106 Rallye which I loved like a human baby before eventually modifying it so badly that I ruined it. I mourn it still. It's fair to say that Peugeots are in my motoring bloodstream. It isn't radical. It isn't aggressive. And it isn't oversteery. One sits just outside reception looking pert and perfect and making the car park full of 208s feel just a little under pressure. It isn't optimised for the track. I learned to drive in a 309.

Q:

peugeot 106 gti coil packs!!!can they be replaced individually or has the whole coilpack got to go?

got a 106 gti...and ive got a feeling theres an ignition problem...misfiring, holding the revs, exhaust spitting...does anybody know if the coils in the coilpacks can be replaced individually or is it the whole coilpack that needs to be replaced?any other ideas what the problem could be?was thinking spark plugs..other than that im baffled!help would be appreciated, cheers!
(asked by Yusha R on May 23, 60)

A: If this car uses the same 1.6 16v engine thats fitted to the Saxo VTS then the coil pack is replaced as one complete unit, though you may be able to buy the 4 spark plug insulators fitted to it separately. When you say the revs are holding... you mean they are sticking on too high? You may have a faulty stepper motor, this controls the idle speed. To be honest i would book the car in at a main dealer or garage with decent diagnostic equipment and have them look at it... it's best to do this first than go throwing money at the thing not knowing if you are looking at the problem area! Q:

Would anyone recommend buying a Peugeot 106 gti?

Im thinking of buying one. Anyone got a good or bad experiences. And what are they like to drive?
(asked by Daniel S on July 22, 2008)

A: My son had one for three years and I did all the maintenance and repairs. Very nippy and handle well but not as refined as modern hot hatches. Suspension a bit harsh but good. Divers footwell a bit cramped. Prone to minor electrical niggles especially the alarm system. Sometimes when you locked the car the nearside indicator would stay on and it needed to be unlocked then locked again several times. Didn't happen very often though. They eat lambda sensors, replaced two when he owned it. (£50 from Lucas). Top o/s engine mounting bolts snap (by ecu) as it's only a 8m/m bolt, happened twice then I drilled and tapped it out to 10m/m and that cured it. Only an hours job and simple to fix. Simple to work on and tough as old boots. He wrote a Mondeo off with it and suffered no major structural damage. Had it back on the road in three weeks. Need regular servicing so look for one with a good service history as they will have all been thrashed but seem to withstand it o.k. Need decent tyres or you will lose it on wet roads, had Continentals on his, damned good tyres for grip and wear. Averaged about 30 mpg usually. Get parts from GSF (German Swedish & French) car parts, cheap to reasonable prices and good availability. (example- Brembo discs and F/pads £50 a set). Great fun to drive, puts a big smile on your face every time. Find a good one and you won't be disappointed. Hope this helps. Good luck! (answered by pauleypfan on July 22, 2008)

A: very cheaply made, all panels are easily scratched and crack inside because they are cheap plastic, the letters GTi will automaticly cost you on the insurance side of things, a boy racer type car means your car will be usd for spare parts by them when you leave it unattended, say goodbye to your hubcaps everytime you leave the car unattended in case its the last time you see them.. Q:

Will a stainless steel exhaust from a peugeot 106 gti s reg fit on a 306 xsi m reg?

Ive got my old exhuast of my last car which was a peugeot 106 gti 1998 s reg andwaswondering whether it would fit on my peugeot 306 xsi 1994 M reg? Would it have to be welded?
(asked by Rachel on March 07, 2007)

A: The wheel base distance is different for these two cars. So the exhaust length is different too. There is even a difference between a 2 door and a 4 door of the SAME MODEL, if you had that.. but you don't.
Plus... do you know the difficulties of welding Stainless Steel? Not many garages want to do that, it involves using inert gases.
Even if you paid for the special weld job, you would still have a "USED exhaust from and OLD car".
I don't recommend the money and effort, sir. (answered by Trevor Trillion HAS STOPPED on March 11, 2007)
