Nick McCartney of Holland bought his 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix when it was six months old for $25,000. McCartney has taken the Grand Prix across the country and drag raced it legally at Northern Michigan Speedway in Kalvea. Now 14 years old, the Grand Prix has seen its better days — but still has plenty left in the tank for an off-road demolition derby. McCartney raced his beloved machine to the 13-lap feature win at the Ottawa County Fair Monday night in front of a packed grandstand. McCartney pounced an opportunity late in the race when the two lead cars in front of him got caught up together. “It’s sentimental value,” McCartney said as he celebrated his win with friends and family. It was his first feature win in the Unique Motor Sports-sponsored series. He pushed them out of his way and did not let anyone catch him. He’s gotten his money’s worth. It’s doing its job.
