Mark Bennett: Automotive era passes with end of Pontiac - Terre Haute Tribune Star December 06, 2009
“At their best, Pontiac was the American muscle car. If you wanted to go fast, with a car that said, 'Get out of my way,' with a big engine and smokin'
In 1964 he joined the Pontiac racing program and did design work on the Pontiac GTO and Super Duty 455 Engine Program. After earning a Masters in Automotive Engineering from Chrysler Institute, Skip became one of the original Ram Chargers in 1957 developing the record breaking C/Altered High and Mighty drag racer.
Q:
A: replace all seals and gaskets in the block, clean up valves, new plugs, wires, distributor, fine tune carb. replace crank bearings piston bearings and piston rings just for starters. buy a service manual for that engine and tranny. It will tell you how to take it all apart. (answered by wattywat2003 on January 31, 2008)

A: Hi Josh, Robert here, I know everyone has some thing to say about this 400 to 455 but it is best if you ask some one that done it (like me) If the block reads near the driver side motor mount 400 it is a 400 block. And the reason why you will find the 455 crank in a 400 is that the 455 main journal's are half inch larger and would burn out at high RPM's. So you take the 400 block and grind the 455 mains down to fit the 400 and you have what we call a sleeper block. It is a 455 if what you say is true. Modelo Olds taught me a lot of building in my time along with Keith Black and Ed Issky. Now you need to match your Torque converter stall speed with your cam and diff. (4:11.1) if your converter locks up on low RPM's you will only burn the tires off the rims. You also will need to tub the wheel wells and put some tall cheater slicks on it with, NO smaller stall converter then a 3000 RPM stall speed. As for cam, carb and headers. a 4.72 in. lift 5.12 ex lift with a 260* duration will do you for the street. This block will breath too and need a 780 to 830 cfm carb. As for the headers put a 22 inch pipe off the collectors and draw a crayon stripe down the pipe when cold and at the track. make one run and shut down ASAP. look at the pipe and cut at the melted crayon line. Here is were you will cut and install a cross pipe. This will balance the power flow and torque. Also cross drill the crank and install a true roller timing kit.
