5 Cars: Muscle Cars to Blow Your Refund On

Best of all, a muscle car can make its driver look like she or he shouldn't be messed with: These powerful, though fairly inexpensive, vehicles can make you look and feel tougher, stronger, sexier and richer than you probably are. " We're talking a huge, honkin' V6 or V8 engine, rear-wheel drive, something you'd imagine Fonzie driving in a drag race. This week's 5 Cars suggests grabbing a muscle car. According to  Merriam-Webster , it's one of "a group of American-made two-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving. If you're like many people, you've done your duty by the tax man and have a refund check sitting in your hands. If you're the average refund recipient, you have  just under $3,000  to play with, according to Bargaineering. Well, being that this is a column concerning cars, what do you think we'd suggest you do with that windfall.

Q:

1996 pontiac grand prix engine light?

I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix. When i first start my car in the morning it runs really rough and the engine light comes on and off. Once the car is warm it runs fine.
Can anyone tell me what the problem could be?
(asked by Linda V on October 15, 2007)

A: Your combustion chamber is full of carbon. Take off the EGR and the air intake tube and look inside the throttle plate. You may find the port where the EGR connects to the plenum has a clogged port. You just need to get the combustion chamber cleaned, and change the spark plugs if they haven't been changed in a while. A: Got to get those computer error codes read out first to help diagnose what might be wrong. Buy your own Actron OBD-II code reader and you'll easily be able to connect it up under your steering wheel and read out the error codes as well as reset the MIL check engine light too. Only seventy dollars or so. Works on any 96 or newer car.

Q:

Will the engine of a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am fit into a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix?

I just got into an accident with my 1995 Pontiac Grand Am. The car is almost in perfect shape except for the roof and possibly the axle. Now, I found a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix for sale cheap, but without an engine. I was wondering if it would be possible and economical to buy the engineless Grand Prix and transfer the Grand Am's engine into it. Thanks to any help you could give.
(asked by Jack T on May 19, 8815)

A: To make sure everything goes smoothly, a 3100 SFI out of the Grand Am to the Grand Prix would work the best. Any other motor out the Grand Am would not be worth the trouble of sticking in the Grand Prix.

However if you want to have some fun, find a Supercharged 3800 and tranny out of a post 1997 Grand Prix GTP. It will take some customization but you will have a little hot rod. (answered by kingkn8 on December 21, 2008)

A: should as long as the engine's are the same. easiest that way too! (answered by Stu Dly on May 19, 9089)

Q:

why wont my 95 pontiac grand am engine turnover even with a new starter and battery?

the interior lights turn on, windshield washers work, and air blows, but no engine spark, just a humming sound with no crank at all.

A: Here's some good news.

The 1998 Pontiac Grand Am has Consumer Reports' Much-Worse-Than-Average reliability ratings in the following categories:

Engine Cooling
Fuel System
Electrical System
Brakes
Exhaust
Squeaks & Rattles
Body Hardware

and the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am has Consumer Reports' Much-Worse-Than-Average reliability ratings in the following categories:

Engine Major
Engine Cooling
Electrical System
Climate System
Brakes
Paint/Trim
Squeaks & Rattles
Body Hardware
Power Equipment
Audio System.

Also:

The Pontiac Grand Am is on AutoOnInfo.net's list of Automobiles with Worst Engine Reliability, with an Engine Reliability Rating of -.88 on a scale of -1.00 to +1.00.

And the 1995 Pontiac Grand Am has a Reliability Percentrank of .05 on a scale of 0.00 to 1.00. For reference, Pontiac's overall 1995 Reliability Percentrank average is .24, General Motors' is .37, Honda's is .83, and Toyota's is .92.

Consequently, if an engine turnover-failure is your only problem, you should count yourself very fortunate. (answered by Gene R. Z on May 19, 864)
