5 million this year -- halfway between their peak in 2005 and their 30-year low in 2009. 6 years, up more than a full year from 2008, according to the research firm Polk. But dealers say sales likely won't collapse in the second half of 2011, as they did in 2009. It's an increasingly common reaction among would-be car buyers that has dealers and automakers worried. Analysts say the swoon in financial markets and economic uncertainty could reduce auto sales by a few percentage points, shrink earnings and delay hiring in an industry that has been a recent leader in job creation. In May, many believed sales would reach a healthy 13. The average age of a car in the U. S. is 10. Also, older cars will still need to be replaced. That's because banks are lending more freely, and lease deals, which went away during the recession, are making a comeback.

A: you buy your new points and condensor,( if you have not done so, also replace the cap, wires and rotor)
Remove the cap, and rotor.
Look in the distributor, identify the parts you are replacing, and where the wires fasten together.
unhook the wire, take out the two phillips screws, that hold the points, and one screw that holds the condenser (be very careful not to drop one of the screws down in the dist , )
install your new points and condenser.
Insert the condensor wire and the wire from the ignition on the screw( make certain the wires are all the way inserted behind the screw, if they aren't the car will not start) tighten the screw.
There are two- three ways you can set the dwell on this distributor
If you do not have a dwell meter:
bump the start until the points are fully open, set the gap at 34 thousands with a flat feeler gauge, by turning the allen screw on the front of the point set...
If you have a dwell meter:
Replace the cap and rotor,
Hook up the dwell meter to the coil
start the car
insert the allen wrench through the window in the cap
turn the screw until the DM reads 31-34
In a pinch.. you can use the last method, without the dwell meter, and turn the screw "until it runs right" which when you check it later, will be 31-34..... (answered by Sophie B on June 22, 2009)
