Q:
How can I tell the difference between a leaking radiator and a cracked head gasket in a Saab 9000?
Just before the car overheated yesterday, it started making the automotive death rattle. I popped the hood and one of the fans was not working. Once it cooled off a little, I drove it home and put some AlumaSeal and antifreeze into a completely empty radiator. I turned the heater on high and let the car idle for about 20 minutes and the temperature gauge didn't rise much and all fans were operational, so I drove back to work. Two hours later, there was a huge puddle of antifreeze under the car.(asked by Unrepentant Fenian Bastard on July 29, 2009)
A: Was the puddle directly under the radiator?
You may have done some damage to the engine. You could pull the spark plugs to see if there is any trace of antifreeze or anything else abnormal. Is there white smoke coming out of the exhaust? Look under the oil cap (where you fill it) and see if there's any milkshake-looking goo. Also pull the dipstick and look for the goo or any other signs of moisture.
Chances are good that it's the radiator or the hoses. If it were head gasket it would probably not leave a puddle, as it would be leaking internally.
Look for damage. Do you smell anything inside of the car? It would smell like sticky/sweet/metallic. That would probably mean the heater box or hoses are the problem.
You need to find out the source of the leak. (answered by sunshine on July 29, 2009)
and if it was a pin hole it might have fix it but more chance stop leak wil stop up somethings that dont need to be and most likely a rubber hose bad water pump and if you can see coolant you got a leak just look for whats wet look for a drip (answered by kelly_f_1999 on July 29, 2009)
