Armed With PowerPoint and 'Monty Python' Jokes, Saab Executive Addresses ...

PARSIPPANY, N. J. — Timothy Colbeck, the Saab Cars of North America president and chief operating officer, was the keynote speaker at the sponsors’ dinner on Thursday for the Saab Club of North America owners convention , which runs through... He showed a PowerPoint illustrating Saab’s financial ups and downs, with a flow chart and timeline with green, blue and yellow boxes — the latter color corresponding to trying moments in the company’s recent history. On Tuesday came word from news agencies that a government outfit called the Swedish Enforcement Agency began telling banks that they could seize Saab assets to pay outstanding debts. “The yellow boxes are the ones the press covers,” he said. “All this press has really eroded confidence in the brand,” Mr. Colbeck said. One might think the occasion would be muted, given the company’s much publicized financial troubles. The brand is forgoing a stand at the Frankfurt auto show in September. Production at the brand’s primary facility, in Trollhattan, Sweden, is stalled.

Q:

Is a white SAAB convertible a good car for a 15 year old?

I bought my daughter a saab convertible, is that a good car for her? She'll be 16 in october, and yeah this is her email address. Please let me know. Is it safe?
(asked by nikkideejay [Su-Fi! :)] on June 07, 2008)

A: SAAB has been very well known for safety, performance and control. They are safe and most SAAB cars have 5 star safety certification including the convertible. It is not clear from your question as to what year model and what level SAAB convertible you bought for your daughter. Please give that information so that the answers can be more specific. I am driving SAAB since 1994 and I am into my 4 th SAAB now. I love the cars for there longevity and reliability. Great choice, I am sure she will enjoy the car. However, do maintain it as per schedule and do not ignore minor issues as they can become bigger issues and cost more later to fix. (answered by Tashfeen Qayyum on June 07, 2008)

Q:

Will the Yakima KingJoe 3 bike rack fit on a Saab convertible?

Specifically I'm wondering if the KingJoe 3 bike rack will fit on a 2000 Saab 9-3 convertible that has the factory spoiler. I'm worried that the rack won't go over the spoiler.

I would call their customer service department. I have a Saab 9-3 convertible, but no bike rack. (answered by Ginger on June 23, 2008)

Q:

How to replace top on saab convertible ng900?

Probably cheating asking 2 questions but here goes. How do you replace the complete convertible top and windshield on a Saab ng900?
(asked by Darell T on December 21, 2008)

A: This is only for the 900 series from 94-98 (you failed to mention the year of the car). This also will work for the 98-2002 Saab 9-3 as it was redeisgned in 2003. The windshield I don't recommend you replace - that takes special bonding and a warm room to heat the bonds (those instructions are not included here - this is only for the covertible top which is very difficult in itself):

Removal Instructions
Make sure the second bow has been cut in accordance with SI Bulletin 812-1566 on cars within the VIN S7000216 - S7002837 and S7010023 - S7016129 If it has been cut correctly, the remainder of the end of the second bow should be 5 mm.

The bow must be cut towards the front of the car
If the bow is cut incorrectly, the height of the second bow will be incorrect. If this is the case, it must be replaced before the new outer roof is fitted.
The second bow has a new design from VIN V7008824, see below
The bow is cut towards the rear of the car
Make sure the fifth bow is fitted with guides for the rear window. If they are missing, the top stack must be modified before the roof material is fitted

Open the top tonneau to be half open Cover straight up
Remove the headliner & Retaining strip attached to the front bow
Remove the front rail seals and seal retainer by removing the front screw (a). Take out the seal from the retainer and undo the “concealed” screw
Remove the two rear dome nuts
Remove the roof material from the first bow
Remove the rivets that secure the cables to the roof material
Remove the rivets that secure the front side rib to front rails
Remove the outer roof from the second bow
Remove the rivets securing the rear side rib to the mid rails
Remove the outer roof from the third bow
Remove the rear side rails
Remove the rear covers below the rear rails
Remove the fifth bow seal
Unplug the connectors for the heated rear window
Remove the roof material from the 5th bow
Raise the top and lock the 5th bow
Pull out the cables from the sides of the roof material & tape the ends up to avoid paint damage
Remove the roof material from the rear rail
Remove the felt strip covering the 4th bow staples
Mark the 4th bow center and remove the 4th bow staples
Remove the roof material
Remove the window guides and do not re-install them when the new material is drying.

Installation instructions
If you are replacing the top with a top where the rear glass was bonded with new style that is clip mount then you must modify the top stack first in-order for it to work

Place material on top stack
Make sure the centre mark for the window frame is in front of the centre hole on the fifth bow & secure w/clamp
Secure the corners of rear rail with clamps
Raise fifth bow half way and check that material fits around fifth bow and rear rail corner
Make cuts in the edge of material to be glued so it fits better to the stack. Use stack and the old material as a template
-Glue the rear edge of the roof material to the fifth bow w/3M Super Weather-strip Adhesive. Apply the adhesive to the underside of the fifth bow, approx. 10 mm up on the upper side of the fifth bow, and on the edge of the roof material
-Glue the roof material starting in the center of the fifth bow and working toward one corner & hold with clamps & do the same to the other side of the fifth bow
-Secure the roof material to the corners of the rear rails of the top stack before the adhesive dries. Use clamps to prevent material from becoming crooked
-Work the material thoroughly over the fifth bow before the glue has dried. Otherwise, there may not be enough material to go round the corners of the rear rail. The seam should be even and tight round the fifth bow & allow glue to dry for 12 hours
Remove clamps & apply thread lock to the screws that will hold the guides
Install the wiring for rear defrost through top and plug in connectors
-Cut away any excessive material round the fifth bow. Cut from the inside of the outer flange on the sealing strip so that adhesive spill is concealed by the sealing strip. Use a razor blade. Make sure the flange for the sealing strip is visible
-Press the sealing strip into place on the fifth bow. Use soapy water on the seal to facilitate fitting.
-Raise the soft top so that the fifth bow is locked
-Fold back the roof
-Attach 4th bow to fifth bow and make sure it will not move during top fitment
-Pull the roof material flap over the fourth bow and centre it with the marking. The centre is marked with a cut on new outer roofs. Stretch tight and staple on the material flap
-Place the felt strip in place over the fourth bow
-Fold forward the roof material to the rear rails of the top stack. Glue the material to the rear rails using 3M Super Weather-strip Adhesive. Allow to dry and remove clamps
-Place covers back in place below rear rails & put rear rail seals back in place
-Thread the cables through the sides of the roof material
-Blind rivet t (answered by saab_9_3 on December 21, 2008)
