G. Chambers Williams III: GM seeks small success with Sonic

Chevrolet's all-new Sonic will begin arriving at dealerships within the next few weeks, a bold experiment by GM to manufacture a small car in the United States, rather than importing it as it has done in the past — and as all other automakers do now. General Motors this past week began production of the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic subcompact car at a newly remodeled factory in Orion Township, Mich. The Sonic replaces the South Korea-built Aveo in the Chevy lineup, and was developed in that country. With a starting price of $14,495 for the sedan and $15,395 for the hatchback, the Sonic will compete against such entries as the Ford Fiesta, Nissan Versa and Fiat 500, which are all made in Mexico. The new Aveo model already is on sale in 30 countries.

You Ask We Answer

Q:

I want to buy Scion rims for my Scion?

I want to buy the rims that scion makes for their scions, however theyre a little bit costly. If you buy from the dealership, can they add that cost to the amount you have financed on the car? So it'll just add to the montly payment?
(asked by Britt on August 25, 2009)

A: could always look for it on criagslist (answered by john m on August 25, 2009)

A: I love my tC. First, the good.

The car handles nicely. It's not going to handle as hard or as well as an Mitsu Eclipse for instance because of the dual moonroofs, lots of body flex.

At 160hp, it's a 'spunky' car. It has a lot of oomph, and under 40 it accelerates like an IS400. Above that it kind of 'hangs', but it's based on a Camry engine.

For the price, the features and the interior make a top notch sell. I thoroughly enjoy driving it.

Now, the bad.

The car has been recalled twice already. First, for the moonroof (and I imagine the 2007s won't have this problem) and now for the airbags (again, the 2007s should be fine). According to my insurance, there's going to be a third recall but I don't know for what, yet. I have a 2006 Scion tC in white (and an '04 xB in silver).

It's a pretty new car, and it isn't a line that was introduced in another country and then brought here (like the xB was in Japan, named the bB, since '99). It has to work its kinks out. As long as you're buying an '07, I imagine you won't experience any problems like early adopters.

As mentioned before, you can head over to http://www.tirerack.com or http://www.wheelsnext.com. But more importantly, head over to http://www.scionlife.com, the biggest message board for Scion owners. There are huge threads there and lots of pictures of what people have done to their tCs... some of them have been at SEMA and in auto mags. (answered by Prakash V on December 14, 2006)

A: Go to www.tirerack.com. It has a section that allows you to see wheels of different sizes and how they will actually look on your car. It also gives the maximum and minimum sizes you can work with.

Hope this helps. (answered by Lemar J on December 14, 2006)

Q:

How much will it cost to buy stock rims for the Scion tC?

Well I bought a used Scion tC but the rims are bullshit. I want to know how much it will cost to buy the stock rims for the Scion tC and get them installed at the Toyota/Scion dealership or anywhere in or by Los Angeles that will do it. Please dont give me your opinion on the Scion tC (unless its positive) and dont call me names for buying a Scion tC like the other question I asked about the scion
(asked by nines on August 23, 2007)

A: Check craigslists and Ebay. A lot of people sell their stock rims for really cheap because no one wants to buy used stock tC rims. I've seen them on Ebay many times. I'm thinking about selling mine and getting new rims if you want to make an offer. I also have the stock taillights, exhaust system, clutch, and shocks and struts ready to sell. If interested they all have less then 90 miles on them. Goodluck (answered by ktlb612 on August 23, 2007)
