Rough road for rally car privateers

They plunk down cold, hard cash to buy the vehicles they turn into racecars (called "shells" because they are stripped down to little more than a shell of a car before the roll cage is inserted and racing parts are added to turn it back into a... It's an eye-wateringly expensive endeavor, and while factory-backed teams enjoy the support of their car manufacturers to get cars built and budgets funded, privateers are going it alone. It isn't a small investment to run a racecar, considering the current resale price of the cars in the X Games field range from about $20,000 to more than $500,000 -- each. As one might expect, the privateers' cars are on the low end of the price range.

You Ask We Answer

Q:

What is the widest tire and rim i can fit on my 2008 subaru sti?

I want it to be really wide
(asked by Djshaneantonio on May 25, 2009)

A: If you don't wat to do any fender modification, then a 265 is the widest. A 275/35/18 can be fit with slight rolling of the rear fender and anything bigger will require rolling of both fenders and probably some coilovers and aggressive camber settings. What is te reason for wanting such wide tires? You know that with the same air pressure, a 245 tire and a 285 tire will have the same size contact patch. The shape will change and the wider you go, you may get better lateral grip but lose acceleration and braking grip. Really not much a reason to go much wider than 245 or 255. There are some guys on the forums running 18X10 with 285 tires but it's mostly for show. (answered by I <3 my Suby. on May 26, 2009)

Q:

please help me get a subaru 2008 WRX STI I'm going to find a way so help me! It will be good karma. JOB IDEAS

hey
I'm 21 I need to have a subaru wrx sti 2008
I was working in the mortgage industry making big bucks, but you know what happen to that business. I'm looking for a new job! How can I make some real money...seriously my goal is within a month to own a STI...what would you do? I want serious answers because if you believe it or not this is a very serious question. I will own one of these cars soon but I need your help to figure out how I'm going to pay for this. I need money I need this car and I need it ASAP. What would you do in this situation? anything? Ok well this was a random question I hope I get a good response.
I'm a good kid I go to school only have about 2 more years of college until I have a finance degree, but in the meantime I need to make money..what can I do to make good money?
(asked by Jaz W on February 29, 2008)

A: First, you don't "need" an STi. You "Really, Really, Reeaaalllly WANT IT". We all do. Hell, if I wasn't married, I'd be driving an 08 STi right now. But I'm stuck with my 06 WRX.

You want to get a job where you can buy a $35,000 STi within a month. Good luck with that. The most you can do is earn 2 or 3 thousand dollars in a month and use that for downpayment. But the monthly finance and insurance will kick your butt.

Try to land yourself in a paid internship with a finance company or something, they should give good salaries.

If you do end up with the STi, do us all a favor and don't be a douche and wreck the car or get in other peoples harms way. It'll look bad for the rest of us Subie owners ;-) (answered by WReX on February 29, 2008)

Q:

Would a 2008 Subaru Impreza STI hood with scoop fit on a 2008 Subaru Impreza Wagon 2.5I?

From photos they don't look too different, except that the STI looks more like a rally car but is more expensive.
(asked by aaron_shultzman on August 14, 2009)

A: If you do this, I would find a way to fabricate a shroud to direct water away from electricals when driving in the rain. The late 90's Impreza's that had hood scoops were blocked on the inside and I assume they did it for a reason. The new STI hood scoop is known to suck so much air in it bends the fins on the inter coolers so I can only imagine the amount of rain that will be blowing in there on the freeway.
