Q:
Is there a coolant air release valve in a volkswagon golf?
There is air trapped in the system for my coolant in my year 97 vw golf, how do I get the air out? I cant find a valve or anything...
Thanks in advance (asked by HelloTher'Dollface! on February 11, 9564)
A: Which engine? 2.0L or the 2.8L VR6?
2.0L.... Theres a small rubber coolant hose on the side of the cylinder head above the coolant flange that goes to the coolant bottle. With the car COLD and OFF, remove that hose (get ready to soak up some coolant that will pour out of the head). With a flash light look into the metal nipple that comes out of the head. There is a VERY small metered hole built into it. This hole gets plugged with debri and stops air from venting to the bottle and allowing the system to "burp". Take a small straight pick or awl and push it into the nipple to open that small hole again. I usually take a small drill bit and open that hole abit to allow the debri to make it to the bottle where it can eventually be sucked out. If that hole wasnt plugged, you will need to reassemble, top off the bottle with coolant/water and run the engine at higher RPM (3000 or so) to get the water pump to circulate the coolant at a higher rate of flow, untill the car is close to normal running temp. Now if you have air in the system you will probably boil over. Let the car cool off over night and see if the level went down. It should have. Otherwise there is a blockage in the cooling system and not allowing air to escape to the highest point in the system, which is the bottle.
2.8L...... No easy way unless you have what we technician's use, a vacuum assisted cooling system filling tool. ( http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp? P65=&tool=all&item_ID=72508& group_ID=12500&store=snapon-store&am p;dir=catalog ) You will have to follow the same steps as mentioned in the last part of above. Run the engine untill hot at higher RPM to get coolant and air to move. There arent any known points of blockage on the VR6. The Thermostats very rarely stick closed, but has happened.
1.9L TDI..... Same as VR6... Run until hot at higher RPM, let cool over night and check to see if the level went down, if so, air escaped and you need to top off the coolant.
By the way, how do you know there is air trapped? Overheats quickly? Boils over? Maybe there is something else going on...??
Hope this helps some! (answered by Maverick on February 11, 9811)
